Widely regarded as one of the most elegant and select cars to ever come out of the assembly werks at Sindelfingen, the W180 Coupes and Cabriolets were some of the last cars to be completely hand assembled on a stationary assembly platform. With only 2,178 cabriolets produced, they were exclusive and significantly expensive for their time, with no expense was spared in their construction and finishes.

Professionally repainted a few short years ago, the finish is gorgeous, marred only by minor imperfections, none of which are significant enough to appear in the photographs. The body is entirely straight with excellent panel fits and gaps, and there’s no evidence of any accidents. The body is also rust-free and undercarriage is entirely solid, the pans having recently been professionally replaced at a cost exceeding $15k. The chrome is original, showing only light patina, and the glass and rubber are in great shape. The interior presents beautifully, the tan seats showing only minimal wear, the carpets clean without any fraying, the interior panels excellent and the luxurious wood trim is absolutely stunning, recently refinished to a mirror sheen. The car’s soft top is the correct German canvas and shows no wear or tears with an crystal clear rear window.

Upon turning the key and firing the ignition the dual Solex carbureted 2.2L inline six cylinder engine comes to life eagerly, idling effortlessly and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the 4-speed transmission’s gears. The car brakes as straight as it drives and the ride quality it excellent, indicative of the renowned engineering upon which Mercedes built its name. Extensive mechanical work has been recently performed, including entirely rebuilt brakes, an entirely rebuilt rear end, new exhaust, new wiring for the head, tail and marker lights and general mechanical sorting. The car is a joy to drive, whether tooling around town or cruising down the highway, and wherever it goes it never fails to garner attention from other drivers and pedestrians.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a gorgeous, rare, entirely solid and mechanically sound 220S Cabriolet. W180 cabriolets have firmly established their rightful place in the investment quality market, having realized steady appreciation over the past decade, with sales results over $200k for concours quality examples. While this example isn’t at a concours level, its beautiful aesthetics and solid mechanicals will undoubtedly provide its next owner with years of enjoyment at a much more reasonable price.
