*** Note from my client describing the vehicle and history.
The 250 SL was introduced at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show. Production had already commenced in December 1966 and ended in January 1968. This 1968 represents 1 of 488 made and sent to the US during the short one-year production run. This obviously makes this 250 SL one of the rarest of the
W 113 series cars. The Mercedes W113 is considered by many as the last of the truly regal Mercedes convertibles. Nicknamed the “California Coupe” this classic came off the production
line with only a black “Pagoda” hardtop and matching interior, but no soft top.
These "Pagoda" cars were largely hand-built in Germany. This gave each one a level of fit and finish that made them collector's cars from the outset. For those who love rarity, a 250 SL like this one is a gold medal. Highly drivable and enjoyable, the 250SL is undoubtedly one of the most interesting examples available today. Benefiting from 48 years of family collector ownership, this 250SL carries the legacy of having never driven in the rain! A true find!
"Handsome in its original color combination including a fire-red exterior finish and black hardtop with black Mercedes-Benz logo wheel accents, this very well-preserved treasure carries a rich history. Like ourselves, the previous owner was a member of the Mercedes-Benz Club, and since ’68 this vehicle was garaged and meticulously cared for. Soliciting new ownership, their ad for sale read “Must Sell, Grandson Just Got License!” This proved up to be the actual motivation to sell as the owner was elderly and recognized that younger family members would not care for this rare vehicle with the level of attention he demanded. We’ve carried the baton. With its lifetime of pampering, this 250SL has traveled 205,000 miles from new, and only 45,000 miles on the perfectly restored engine.
The 250 SL retained the stiffer suspension and sportier feel of the earlier SL class, but provides improved agility with a new engine and rear disc brakes. Range also improved with increased fuel tank capacity from 65 Liter (17.2 US gal) to 82 Liter (21.7 US gal). Like its predecessor, the 250 SL was offered with a 4-speed automatic transmission, this classic wears its original colors, is equipped with a Becker Europa radio, and the tools and owner's manual in a Mercedes pouch. The 2496cc single overhead cam six-cylinder engine is fitted with a Bosch Mechanical fuel injection system and produces 150 horsepower.
Additional highlights include the excellent Mercedes-Benz 4-speed automatic gearbox, air conditioning, and period correct Michelin radial tires. All instruments are the factory-installed items and are in working order. This SL runs and drives well with excellent road performance. The interior showcases elite Italian leather racing seats, used for its tours of Monterey’s Laguna Seca Raceway. Since our ownership, the SL was serviced by the marque specialists at Bruce Strauss Autocare in Orange County, California. This vehicle is attractive and engaging throughout right down to its custom California plates that read “68 250 SL.” Bending around coastal 2 lane roads as originally intended, or brought to show as a rare find, this serves as a great addition to anyone’s collection."
