1963 Lincoln Continental Sedan

1963 Lincoln Continental Sedan

An automotive masterpiece that was penned by storied designer Elwood Engel, the fourth-generation Continental makes a big first impression. For starters, this era of Continental was the first mass-produced automobile that adhered to aircraft tolerances.

Massive yet chic, this nearly 5,000 LB automobile, has an aura that stretches far beyond its large proportions. The slab-sided body, highlights a level of fit and finish that's average. Some scrapes and scratches on the paint and even some invasive rust, this is a project car that runs well, and drives smoothly.

Exterior
Oxford Gray, which may be original or an earlier respray, shows several areas of cracking and crazing. Invasive rust has snuck in on several areas, and even creating a hole in the passenger door. The massive slabs of steel, that are attached show some inconsistent gapping, however overall the body remains straight. A few shade tree paint touch ups are noted on the C pillar. All brite work and chrome is attached, but shows fading and slight pitting. A pop of the trunk reveals some original carpet, and the lining that came from the factory. A Lincoln Star, which was based on the Continental Star, and adopted as the logo in the 1950's when Lincoln and Continental merged, graces the front of the car, as well as the standard Lincoln hubcaps.

Interior
Red leather with numerous cracks and folds, (although not open to the foam padding) remains comfortable. Fronting this leather is a cherry wood steering wheel which makes its way out of an original dash that houses instruments and conveniences such as cruise control, intermittent wipers, Air Conditioning and a power antenna. Door panels are covered in red and have a vinyl wood veneer panel inserted, as well as power windows, power locks, and a side view mirror toggle along with the obligatory for early 1960's the ashtray in the armrest. An unmarred vinyl top to the dash is seen stretching between matching leather and cherry covered door panels and sitting atop is a headlight dimming sentinel. New rugs all around in red, and in good condition, grace the floor, and a nice and tight headliner hangs on above.

Drivetrain
The 8 Cylinder 430ci with a 4-barrel carburetor on top, is attached to a Turbodrive dual range 3-speed automatic transmission, puts power back to a 2.89:1 axle.

Undercarriage
Minor surface rust is seen very intermittently throughout the underside and lower doors. As opposed to the condition of the exterior panels, the underside is very solid and rust free. A new stainless-steel exhaust system (piping), has been very recently installed.

A solid, clean, and in need of some exterior panel TLC, this car drives like a dream, shifts smoothly, and sometimes one cannot even tell you are barely moving. This classic is from back in the day where status was measured in buying as car by the inch, is most assuredly going to increase yours when you drive down Main Street.
