Description:

1972 Jeep Renegade

From the Hills of Pennsylvania. This Auction is for a 1972 Renegade Orange- AMC JEEP Renegade V-8. One of approximately 300 of the 1972 first year factory produced V-8 Renegade Orange Renegades ever made in 1972. This was 1972 and the first time Jeep engineers under AMC leadership stuffed a AMC 304 V8 in the little CJ5 creating a legend. This is one of them. 1972 was the very first year for the V-8 in a CJ-5. There was a Renegade 1 and a Renegade 2 in 70 and 71 with 6 cylinder engines. Then in 1972 AMC did something radical and went with a V-8 in the little CJ5 and it was spectacular. And it was then to become known only as "Renegade" It is this Jeep that started it all with the V8 Renegades unique history. There were very few produced because Jeep at the time was not sure how the public would receive it. It turned out to be a marketing success. Demand far out stripped what was available. The 1972 was actually referred to as "The Super Jeep" The very next year 1973 they had to offer a Renegade without some of the options including the aluminum wheels due to parts shortage. They officially called it the Super Jeep and used fancy decals to meet the public demand of the original limited production 1972 Renegade. For the 1972 with a V-8, black out hood, racing stripes and a power to weight ratio similar to a muscle car, it was a sensation. This Jeep is one of the rare Renegade orange ones color code #508 There were 3 colors only for the official 1972 factory produced Renegades. Renegade orange, Renegade yellow, and Renegade plum. The paint codes were #508, #509 and #510 with only approx only 300 produced in each of the colors. This 1972 Jeep Renegade has only 45,458 original miles on it. It was last on the road in 1990 and was parked due to a broken steering box which saved it from being beat to death and raided for parts. While its not drivable because of the steering box and being stored for so many years, the engine runs excellent with good oill pressure. The engine DOES NOT knock, hammer, smoke, or overheat. The inside of the engine looks very clean. Theres a video of it running. It screams with power like a hotrod. The audio in the video does not do it justice to how it sounds in person. The factory exhaust manifolds are NOT cracked which is rare. It has its correct and original build tag on the valve cover. The engine number is #506H14 showing it was built June 14th of 1972 and H being the 304 V-8. This Jeep also has its original Renegade paint code tag on the firewall (see pic) which is very rare along with the Jeep build tag and the correct Renegade SSRO (Special Sales Request and Order) identification tag from AMC Jeep being number D-5472-1. The D denoting it as a special production vehicle. This is also very rare as 99 percent of the first year V8 Renegades out there or claiming to be a 72 Renegade (fakes) do not have any of the build tags and do not have correct or matching numbers. This Jeep has its correct Renegade boxed frame with the original matched stamped serial number(see pic). The original dash sticker Vin number J2F835TH51374 shows it as being built June of 1972 Toledo 3 speed, CJ5 series open body, 304-V8, with GVW of 3,750 lbs. The 1972 Renegade had the lengthened boxed frame among some other things, heavy duty springs, heavy duty cooling system, racing stripes, black out hood, trac-loc differentia, transmission and fuel tank skid plates, padded dash and sun visors, roll bar, rubber wheel flares, solid rear panel with rear mounted spare, oil and amp gauges (which are always mounted left of steering column for 72 Renegade) The body still has most of its original paint with red primer here and there. This Jeep is still sporting its original Factory Renegade hood decals . The outer body shell is pretty well preserved for its age (see pics). As typical the floors and mounts are rusted and rotted here and there. Because of what the vehicle is they should be replaced instead of patched. Jeep replacement body floor panels are pretty straight forward to do because of how basic and square everything is. And also because they are fairly cheap. The frame is solid. At some point the aluminum rims were most likely swapped for steel, as they were known to corrode and leak after some time. Please Note: This is an Antique historic vehicle. Due to its age it is being sold As-Is where Is for restoration. It may have signs of wear, tear, fade, haze, rust, age, cracking, swirl, nick, chip, dent, weathering, deterioration and may require, service, repair, parts, replacement and or maintenance of any and all components.

:While in 1972 Jeep did sell a few base model CJ5 Jeeps with only the V-8 upgrade, they were not Renegades. To add to the confusion the dealers would sell, and you could buy the Renegade stripe package even though the vehicle was not a Renegade. In reality very few 1972 Factory Renegades were produced and even fewer exist today. Most of the ones around claiming to be 1972 Renegades are fake base model Cjs with engine swaps or they are built from several Jeeps over the years to look like a Renegade, but they are not. An interesting note of the early advertising campaign for the 1972 Renegade is they referred to it as "The Super Jeep" which became another special model version of the Renegade the next year as previously noted. Today it is difficult to find any true 1972 Model Renegade anywhere due to their scarcity and the fact that AMC detailed records were lost and destroyed. The only way to verify a real one is to have all the correct ID tags and other identifiers such as this one. If you can find another one of the true first year V8 Factory produced 1972 AMC JEEP Renegades like this for less money, than buy it. but I doubt you will. It is a unique rare Jeep that is part of Jeeps history. These bring on up to $15,000 in average condition. When restored accurately and verifiable as a 72 Renegade they bring $35,000 and up. Here is one you can afford. I try to price things very reasonable as most things sell via Buy it now within a very short time of being listed.
