Description:
1970 Jaguar Other
Up for sale is a 1970 Jaguar 420G. These are getting to be somewhat rare beasts; as of December last year, there were only 166 left in the UK licensed for road use. This is one of the last built, completed in late 1970, and it needs a new home. This example was originally sold to a textiles business in Edinburgh, Scotland for use by an executive of the company. From there it passed to an American who had Jaguar perform the Federalization and shipped it to Louisiana. Sadly, it sat for years in outside storage. Eventually the car made its way to the Charleston, SC area where my father bought it. After getting it running, Dad used it very sporadically until he gave it to me. Mileage on the car, at 16759, is correct as far as we know. I have documentation of most of its time in the UK and some in the USA.
Unfortunately, condition is not commensurate with the low mileage. As it spent most of its life neglected in outside storage - even during our tenure - the body condition is best described as rough. The floor pans and underbody have been patched, but it needs the trunk floor redone and lots of cosmetic repairs. We have a complete interior minus carpet, but it is not installed. The wood is in fair to poor condition. It is all there, but the veneer is mostly perished. The engine and transmission are also out of the car and will require separate transport. The fuel tanks are not installed, and it needs a new brake master cylinder.
It's not all bad news. The cylinder head has been re-worked and is ready to install. Installed camshafts are S.III XJ6 with the better later camshaft sprockets. There is a complete set of the required gaskets and bearings to finish engine assembly. The front brakes have been converted to Jaguar XJ-S 4-piston calipers and vented rotors, instead of the questionable factory 2-piston calipers and solid rotors. Wheels are 16" Kiwi alloys from an XJ40 or X300. The original front uprights with attached brakes are included, as are the original 14" steel wheels.
This is a 4-speed manual with electric overdrive car. Carburetion is triple SU HD8s.
I would have liked to keep this car and finish it, but have not had time to turn a wrench on it since my son was born 2 1/2 years ago. As it seems unlikely this will change, I'd like it to move on to someone who will either finish it, or use its parts to save another Jaguar.
