1977 International Harvester Scout II, V8, Runs Well, 12 Year Ownership!
1977 International Harvester Scout
1977 INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER SCOUT II
Hi! We purchased this 1977 Scout II in March of 2012 from a family in California while we were living in Austin, Texas. It has been on tons of short trips (usually 30 miles or less) and our kids, and us, loved driving around, looking at Christmas lights when the top was off, taking our bicycles to nearby trails, going to farmers markets, etc.
We have cared deeply for this amazing Scout and have taken great care fixing and replacing whatever was needed throughout the years, except for the rust of course. We brought this Scout back to Indiana where we moved in 2014 and primarily drove it during Springs and Summers due to the harsh Midwest winters and road salt before moving overseas in 2017. While we were away, it mostly sat outside at a shop here in Indiana for 4 years waiting to be restored which obviously never happened, the pandemic partly to blame. Please be aware, there are the typical rattles and creaks, scratches, dents and dings but the looks, frequent thumbs up and random conversations have always been well worth the upkeep of this old binder!Nonetheless, after much needed service and maintenance, it is running well again and ready for it's next owner. Why are we selling, well, while we could drive it pretty much all year in Texas, we thought it was best to keep it garaged during Indiana winter weather. Besides, the kids are getting older and are now more interested in something much newer like a Jeep, Bronco, or perhaps even the NEW Scout coming in 2026 or so! Additionally, with all the kids activities these days, I seem to have less and less time to take it out and figured it's ready for someone else to enjoy and maybe even restore!
DESCRIPTIONThis 1977 International Harvester Scout II is finished in Buckskin tan with white side decals over tanbark vinyl/nylon upholstery. It is powered by a 345ci V8 mated to aChevy 700r4 transmissionand a dual-range transfer case.
Equipment includes a removable steel hardtop with original headliner, 15″ white wagon wheels wrapped with 31x10.50 R15LT BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires, power-assisted brakes, power steering, air conditioning (doesn't work), and front 60/40 split bench seat. This Scout II comes with a line setting ticket, original manual and manufacturer’s literature, and a clean Indiana title in the seller’s name.Additional exterior details include the original color-matched removable steel hardtop with factory luggage rack, a chrome-finished front bumper, dual side mirrors, and rear chrome bumper. This Scout also has manually-locking front hubs and power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes.Curiously, this Scout II has quite a few unique pin stripes although I have no idea who added those and when.
Of note, the 15" white wagon wheels are in very good condition with 31x10.50x15" BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires which were installed new on May 5th 2015 and have travelled less than 3000 miles since new and still retain around 80% tread life.
The cabin features 60/40 split front bench seat and a rear bench upholstered in Tanbark vinyl/nylon with patterned seating surfaces, matching vinyl door panel inserts, dash, and vinyl mat flooring. The original tanbark vinyl spare tire cover is also present. Amenities include air conditioning (heat only) although the air conditioning compressor has not been checked.
The dashboard features matching vinyl and a push-button AM radio, the latter of which lights up but does not work. Instrumentation consists of a horizontal 100-mph speedometer and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure (always shows low so may not be working properly), voltage, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 35812 miles (TMU), about 6k of which were added since acquiring the Scout in 2012.
Due to age, various locations, and the unknown, this Scout II does have several areas of rust, some of which has completely eaten through the metal (see pictures) plus there is surface rust underneath. The floor pans at the front 2 body mounts are also rusted through although the other 4 body mounts look to be in good condition. The rocker panels and bed rails are also rusted and likely need replacement. The rear bench seat is in excellent condition with just one small tear in the vinyl. The front 60/40 bench seat has a saddle cover but the upholstery and seat foam underneath is very worn, especially on the drivers side and could use replacing or just keep the saddle cover on. The driver door doesn't quite close all the way but it does latch. The steering wheel is a bit uncentered to the right as well. The passenger side window is resistant to roll up smoothly and I'm sure there are other quirks and adjustments needed.
MOST RECENT SERVICE/MAINTENANCE
- Comprehensive tune up plus upper radiator hose and clamp, September 2022 ($980.73).
- Carb rebuild, new fuel filter, horn assembly, October 2022($1216.50).
- Recent oil change, main seal replacement, engine crankshaft seal kit and resealed engine oil pan gasket, February 2023 ($2952.75).
It is currently running well with no obvious leaks but aswith any unrestored classic car, this Scout II will need regular maintenance, troubleshooting and occasional repairs but it's hard to beat that 70's 4x4 style, nostalgia and attention when driving around!
