1961 International Travelall - Well traveled workhorse
1961 International Harvester C120
Up for auction is my 1961 ¾ ton International Travelall. This corn binder may be a little rough around the edges after years of use (but not abuse) in Oregon and San Diego but its mechanical heart and soul are as solid as they day it was delivered to Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1961!
According to the line ticket this International Travelall was delivered to Juckeland Motors in Klamath Falls, Oregon (see photo of line ticket). For the next 58 years the Travelall provided faithful service in true corn binder fashion in both Oregon and California.
In 2019 the Travelall was purchased by a collector in Aspen Colorado. While in Aspen the Travelall made appearances at the local car shows and Saturday Cars and Coffee. In July of 2019 the previous owner made the 125 mile trek from Aspen to Kremmling, Colorado for the 26th annual Rocky Mountain I.H. Rendezvous. The Travelall performed flawlessly on the 250 mile round trip to and from Kremmling AND won first place in the stock class at the Rendezvous (see photo of plaque).
A year ago I was offered this old work horse in a trade. After seeing photos of the rig, hearing the story and seeing the receipts for well over $10,000 in repairs since 2007 I thought this would be a fun little rig to own. So, in November of 2019 the Travelall made the move from Aspen, Colorado to Windsor, Colorado.
Over the past year I have enjoyed tinkering with the Travelall and taking it out for weekend breakfast adventures with my wife. The attention and thumbs up this rig gets rivals what any of my restored muscle cars receive. It is just a fun old rig!
Unfortunately, it is time to downsize my collection and this is one of several vehicles I must part with. The Travelall is not restored and definitely no beauty queen but the patina, rust and bruising give the rig a cool factor that can’t be recreated and is a proven crowd pleaser!
The interior on this rig is clean and well sorted. The floorboards are still covered with the original style rubber floor mat. The mat is in nice shape but is showing light wear and does have some minor tears here and there. The seats were recently redone and are SUPER nice but not original. All painted surfaces have light surface rust and Patina adding character to this old workhorse! The headliner has been removed.
As for the body, paint and trim; original, rough and full of character!. The Travelall has significant rust in the floorboards (both sides overtop the fuel tanks), in the roof beltline, rear quarters behind the wheels and in the tailgate. Typical rust on the driver’s side cowl leading edge of both fenders and lower fenders behind the front wheels. Surprisingly rockers and doors are relatively rust free. I believe the Travelall has had one repaint MANY, Many years ago. Today the paint is accented with some of coolest patina I have seen. It really gets folks' attention!!! The body is fairly straight with no major dings or dents. Trim is all intact with some minor dings here and there. Driver’s door closes a little hard and is in need of an adjustment. The passenger’s side front door opens and closes fine BUT the lower hinge is broken. As a result the door drags slightly when being opened. The two rear doors open and close fine. Rear gate opens and closes fine but does have significant rust around the hinges. I was amazed to find the power rear window still worked and the retractable tailgate support cables still operational!! All the glass is good with the exception of the windows in both front and back doors on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Both are cracked but the rig will be sold with two spare used windows.
As far as the instrumentation and gauges go, the oil pressure gauge, volt gauge and fuel gauge (when operating on the right hand (passenger’s side)tank) work. The speedometer and temp gauge do not work. Windshield wipers lights, blinkers and dash lights all work. Horn is functional via an auxiliary button. Dome light works when activated off of light switch but not when the doors are opened. Radio does not work. Heater works fine but cables need lubricating to get defrost to fully open. I was told that the fill nozzle leaked when filling the left side (driver’s side) tank so I have avoided using it at all.
Mechanically the Travelall is very solid. The 304 V-8, transmission, transfer case and differentials are rock solid!Since 2007 there has been over $10,000 spent on the mechanics of this rig (all receipts included) – axle seals, new Warn hubs, windshield washer pump, rear brakes, wheel cylinder rebuild(2), new muffler and tailpipe, flushing of brake and clutch fluids, front and rear inner and outer bearings, carburetor rebuild, steering wheel bushing replacement, front brakes and wheel cylinders, front upper and lower trunnion kingpin bearings, master cylinder rebuild, front and rear diff. service, new E-Brake cables, Monroe gas magnum shocks, Monroe steering stabilizer shock, transfer case removal rebuild and reseal, new front pinion seal, rear output shaft seal (transmission), front and rear driveshaft rebuilds, rebuild of transfer case short shaft, new valve cover gaskets, compression test (all cylinders between 140 and 155), body and frame mount bushing kit and on and on. The Travelall runs and drives great! The Travelall will be sold with a spare transfer case, transmission and other misc. parts.
As for drips leaks and slobbers, it does have a couple. It appears the front differential may be leaking a little as well as either the pan gasket or the oil drain plug.
If you are in search of that ultimate ski rig for those winter adventures to Stowe, Mammoth, Vail or Jackson Hole or just want the perfect surf wagon for those sunny days in Santa Cruz, Santa Monica, Hilton Head or The Hamptons this International Travelall is the ultimate rig for you! Its character and uniqueness can’t be duplicated.
