1980 International Harvester Scout

1980 International Scout

You know what the problem is with this country? You can no longer buy road vehicles made by a manufacturer of farm equipment, that's what's wrong! Maybe it's time for Ford to bring back the Fordson tractor, though that wouldn't be the same. I was reminded of the sad lack of vehicles with combine harvesters in their lineage when we got this IH Scout in our hallowed halls.

For consignment in its repainted, re-bumpered, restored glory...an International Harvester Scout from 1980, which was the last year of production for this vehicle. The consigner put it into the hands of a reputable shop that specializes in this particular model, and they obviously took the ball and ran with it resulting in our current consignment. Read on if you so desire, but I assure you, you'll be impressed!

Exterior
On a really clear day in mid summer with no haze you know what the sky looks like when you peer up at it? That wonderful color drapes this Scout, so we will call it summer sky blue. Not to be outdone, the white graphics affixed to the side cover up some of this summer sky, although it adds a nice breakup to the blue, and mixes with the white hardtop. The panels are all straight and do show some rust bubbling to the surface on or near all the rockers. The bumpers, tire mount and tubular step rails as well as the grille are blackened, and the front bumper has been modified with dual fog lights and a grille guard. Large 15-inch American Racing polished wheels are on all 4 corners, and they are wrapped with 32x11.5R15's. The high stance is impressive as are the twin pop up sunroofs which allows you to see the top of the trees during your ascent in any elevation.

Interior
It is not very often this writer decides to start with the headliner, but in this case, it is definitely warranted. Knitted plaid in blue tan and white makes up the headliner, and it has an embossed deep blue strip running up through the center. A definite custom thoughtful and artistic interpretation for a headliner. A couple of rocket engine style lights have been added for all passengers, and this headliner is affixed to the top by blue buttons...and that is just the headliner! Large overstuffed seats float in a sea of black carpet, and the seats are ultra clean and sporting gray broadcloth for their covering. A custom gray center console with armrest is between these seats, as well as your gearshift and 4WD selector. Up front the dash is pristine with the usual suspects and does have an aftermarket gauge and air conditioning hanging below. Dual buckets in back and a large storage area is fully carpeted in the way back, which offers up plenty of cubic inches for all your gear.

Drivetrain
A 345ci V8 sits in an original looking engine bay which is nicely preserved. On top is an Edelbrock carburetor, and in back an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission which pushes power rearward, (and forward when in 4WD) to a 2.72 axles.

Undercarriage
Peering underneath, we note some surface rust, but pretty well buttoned up under here with solid frame and floorpans. On the driver's rocker was a repair, but is has remediated any rust that was there previously. Leaf spring with newer shocks are seen on the suspension, no evidence of any oiling on any of the transfer case, and a Flowmaster exhaust is installed. Power disc brakes for the front and power drums for the rear can also be noted.

Drive-Ability
It's always a kick to get behind the wheel of these high lifted 4WD trucks and this one was truly a pleasurable experience. It lit right up, and we were off for the test track where it performed beautifully. Good solid handling, nice acceleration, and even a fairly smooth cruise. A truly comfortable interior and that snazzy headliner left this test driver with a smile.

Grab your gear, strap your canoe to the top, and enter this go anywhere, go through anything IH 4 wheeler, and you can only begin to dream of the adventure you'll cook up putting this restored truck through its paces. And you'll do it in vintage custom color, snappy interior, and 4WD style circa 1980.
