1977 International Harvester Scout II Traveler
1977 International Harvester Scout Traveler
Meet Margie. I've owned Margie for 3 years. I bought her from the original owners, Mr. and Mrs. Crum, in southern Oregon and had her shipped to Alabama. I'd always wanted a Scout and scoured the county for months looking for the perfect one. As I said, the Crums bought the truck new. Mr. Crum had recently suffered a stroke and could no longer drive so their family put it up for sale. The truck was always stored in their carport, and Mr. Crum is shown in one of the pictures in the carport.
Since I've owned the truck, I've replaced the wheels and tires with BFG All Terrains (31x10.50s), replaced the rear hatch lift shocks, and changed the oil regularly (Rotella). It's been a sheer pleasure to own and I've received countless offers to buy it over the past 3 years. One woman even followed me flashing her lights for me to stop.
The A/C works (honestly). The heat works. The CB radio works. The AM/FM radio works (I have a bluetooth cigarette lighter adapter I use so that I keep the original radio but can stream music from my iPhone). The cruise control is disconnected, was when I got it. It has a 2" receiver for towing and a trailer brake box. I've not towed with it, but assume the trailer brakes work. The key is sometimes finicky in the rear hatch.
It's had one repaint while the Crums owned it. Mr. Crum mentioned that they didn't paint the fiberglass roof properly so it's flaking. It hasn't bothered me, but one could have it linex'ed white or gelcoated if they so chose.
The interior has some sort of indoor outdoor carpet / rubber backed outdoor rug in the front seating area. I purchased and will include a carpet kit from S&S Upholstery in the factory color but never replaced it. After paying what I paid for the carpet, I had 2nd thoughts and didn't want to get it stained. I have a farm and 3 little girls who sometimes have muddy feet so I left it the way Mr. Crum had it.
I live about 4 hours from Atlanta and have driven it to Atlanta twice with no problems at all. It has the factory 345, 2 barrel, and 727 automatic. To my knowledge, the motor has never been removed. I know the top has never been off of it. Odometer shows 39k miles, which I am certain is 139k. See the photo I've uploaded with dated receipts and mileage. Here is the breakdown of the mileage, documented. 8/27/1986: 75,020mi. 9/23/2008: 129,337mi. 7/29/2012: 129,609mi. 10/14/2014: 129,925mi. 11/26/2017: 139,500mi.
Why am I selling? My only son turns 16 next month. I'm trying to get him something reliable and safe for his first car. I truly do not want to sell Margie, you have no idea. But sometime life trumps hobbies like this.
I'll upload pictures of the rockers tomorrow. I just realized that it looks like rust on the front of the driver's rocker. That isn't the case. It's either dirt or over spray from the black paint but I'll upload more detailed pictures.
