1966 Ford Mustang GT350

For sale! 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback Shelby GT350 Clonein Raven Black gloss.

I've been restoring this Mustang over the last 4 years from bone stock and now am ready to pass it on for someone else to enjoy!

It's a great looking and driving car. A LOT of new parts. Basically the entire powertrain is new. It starts right up, handles great, sounds awesome, and all of the major work has already been completed! Since it is Raven black, it could be left as is or easily add some stripes to turn it into a GT350H Hertz car. My intention was to simply add a side white GT350 stripe (which will be included).

Whats new:

289 with FI tech fuel injection system

20 gallon fuel tank with hi flow fuel pump (does not burp on when refueling!)

T-5 5-speed manual transmission with Hydraulic clutch

KONI suspension

Upgraded cooling system with oversized radiator

Electronic ignition

Power brakes

Front disc brakes

Power Steering

Shelby GT350 reproduction steering wheel with gt350 center logo

17" Mustang GT wheels

Retrosound Bluetooth Stereo w/ front speakers and sub woofer

Limited Slip differential

8" rear end

New two-tone grey and black interior with new headliner and carpet

New Center console

3 point seat belts

New Raven Black paint

New front windshield

Shelby GT350 rear quarter glass

Re-sealed both front and back windows

Upgraded all lights to LED and they all work correctly

Added tachometer to the dash

Shelby Grille with emblem

Shelby gas cap and GT350 emblem

Shelby bullet mirrors

Trunk mat

Deluxe car cover

What still needs to be done:

Exhaust has a small crack/leak. I was planning to redo the entire exhaust system but didn't get around to it yet

There is a loose connection between the stereo and the speakers and the speakers sometimes cut out while driving.

The whole story!

I bought this car in Santa Cruz as a rattle can gray spray painted, running but near stock 1966 fastback in Santa Cruz California about 4 years ago. It had the 3 speed automatic transmission which worked for a while but slipped in the gears, power steering and manual brakes. It did come with the 1966 motor but from what I can tell from the VIN this was originally a 6cylinder car. I believe the original color was burgundy as that seemed to be the base layer before having the car painted.

During the time I’ve owned it, I’ve bee trying to restore the car to daily driving status and make it visually as close as possible to a 1966 Raven Black Shelby GT350. Only a few of those cars were made in black that were not Hertz cars and they’ve always been my favorite.

With that vision in mind, I had a lot of mechanical work done to get her running reliably, including converting to fuel injection with a FI Tech injection system. The nice thing about these kits is that they maintain the stock appearance under the hood, but improve reliability a lot. You really don’t have to wait for it to warm up before heading on the road which is a big improvement over a carburetor. Part of the FI tech conversion required a hi flow fuel pump which was extremely noisy so I decided to replace the stock 16 gallon fuel tank with a 20 gallon tank with built in fuel pump. The benefits are 4 extra gallons of fuel, and a super quiet fuel pump. Also the the typical issues of fuel burping back up on fueling is no longer a problem at all which is great!

I mainly focused on mechanical upgrades until the car was a sound driver before doing any cosmetic work. The automatic transmission was removed and replaced with a brand new t-5 5 speed manual transmission. I first tried it with a linkage clutch but it required tremendous strength to operate so immediately upgraded to a hydraulic clutch which is great and easy. At that time I also replaced the rear end gearing including a limited slip differential. The car really handles sooo much better than it did before, a lot tighter of a launch and a lot more solid in the corners. It also really punches into gear, though my vision for this car again was not to be a track car, but a fun, sporty daily driver, so it’s smooth enough to cruise, but has enough power to enjoy some spirited driving as well. A brake booster was installed as well to the stock front disc brakes.

I also installed black hooker headers, a new cooling system with oversized radiator and large fan, electric ignition, stainless coolant bottle, new battery, engine sway bar, K&N air filter and a host of other upgrades I can’t even remember. In short, the engine is in great shape. The car starts up instantly and purrs like a kitten.

Moving to the interior: It sports new black carpets, headliner and vinyl two-tone black and grey upholstered seats that were already installed when I bought the car. They looked great so I’ve kept them, but have added a TMI center console for extra storage and to accurate beverages. The instrument panel has an all new wiring harness including LED backlit instrument cluster which makes it much easier to see your gauges with driving at night. I also had all interior lights and the rear tail lights replaced with LED’s which are instantly on/off and much brighter than stock. Even the glovebox door light was replaced with an LED so no more mystery battery draining over night if you don’t fully latch the glove box door!

Next, a RetroSound bluetooth radio was installed with a passenger under seat subwoofer. The sound is great, but as of right now there’s a loose connection from the head unit to the speakers which needs to be addressed as the speakers intermittently cut out while driving, while the sub continues to play.

Since I wanted this car to be an enjoyable daily driver, and I live in Southern California, Air conditioning was a MUST for me, so a brand new retro inspired under dash A/C unit was installed which worked amazingly well. Since the car sat at the body shop for over a year, it is currently not blowing cold but I believe it just needs a charge. It’s a brand new system, and worked perfectly on installation.

On to cosmetics, a period correct Shelby GT350 wood steering wheel with Cobra Elbe and dash mounted tachometer were installed just like the GT350’s which really completed the interior look of a real Shelby. Only difference being this car has the two tone seats. Someday I was planning on replacing both front seats with more performance seats but didn’t get that far.

Next, paint. I had the car fully repainted including all body work to prep the car. There was a rust spot at the back bottom drivers side corner of the rear glass that was repaired, and some old bondo work was redone on the roof. I also took this opportunity to replace the front windshield and have both the front and rear glass weather sealed as the car used to always leak in the rain before this. Now the car is water proof! In addition, the stock hood was scrapped and was replaced with a very hard to find accurate replica Shelby GT350 fiberglass hood with functional air scoop. This reduced a lot of weight on the car and looks amazing. Also aids in cooling the motor.

The car was out of my hands for over a year while the restoration was performed and I only got the car back a few months ago. Overall the paint turned out really well but there are a few spots that need a little buffing. I’m planning to have the car detailed before selling.

Lastly the car sports a beautiful reproduction Shelby front grill, Shelby gas cap with GT350 emblem, Shelby bullet mirrors, and 17” Mustang GT wheels.

The car looks and drives great, and needs nothing to be instantly enjoyed, but still has room for personalization by the next owner. It’s a great turn-key fully restored mustang and turns heads wherever it goes.

Known issues:

Almost everything has been addressed at this point but the few remaining items are:

  • Speakers cutting out
  • There is a crack in the headers. It’s not terrible, but a new exhaust will certainly improve performance, reduce cabin noise and improve exhaust tone
  • A/C needs a charge. Not blowing cold right now, but fans do blow as expected.
  • Some squeaks to lock down with the fold-down rear seats. They are much quieter when folded down so I leave them like that.

  • That is everything I have to say about that! I do have a lot of my receipts for the car, but not sure I have every single thing. That being said I’ve invested over 50k car into this car since buying it, so my price simply reflects the value of a restored Fastback Mustang with some great and tasteful upgrades which makes it a great car to drive. I’m sad to see it go, but am at a different point in my life where I have very little time to think about this hobby so I will pass it on to someone else to enjoy!
