Description:
1970 Ford Mustang
Real-deal Mach 1 in unusual color combination. Factory Shaker hood, M-code 351 Cleveland V8, automatic transmission. New interior, runs and drives great, fast and comfortable, fun to drive!According to both the Marti Report and the door tag, this cool Mach 1 is wearing a correct coat of white paint over a factory Ginger interior, a very unusual combination. The Mach 1 stripes, Shaker hood scoop, chin spoiler, and rocker cladding only add to the aggressive look. We especially like that they skipped the rear wing on this car, which always looks like an afterthought and totally covers up the neat ducktail that’s built right into the sportsroof deck lid. The paint was refinished about 10 years ago and still shows extremely well, including the correct satin black stripes on the hood calling out the 351 underneath. It’s worth mentioning that the Shaker hood is factory-installed and the whole thing fits together rather well, with nice gaps all around. The distinctive ribbed cladding on the rockers was exclusive to the Mach 1 and it remains in outstanding condition with none of the pitting that’s found on cars that lived in harsh climates. Chrome is nice, too, including bumpers and stainless trim, so the Mach 1 looks well-dressed, which was surely the point.
The unusual Ginger interior is a nice contrast to the usual black. High-back buckets, a console, woodgrain appliques, and a clock on the passenger’s side were all part of the Mach 1 package. There are new seat covers, door panels, carpets, and a new black dash pad to cut down on glare in the windshield. The only notable deviation from stock is the Grant steering wheel with a fat leather rim, but it works rather well in the sporty Mustang interior. An assortment of gauges keep an eye on the engine’s vitals and they all work properly. There’s a newer AM/FM/cassette stereo in the center stack, just ahead of the chrome T-handle shifter for the 3-speed automatic transmission. The fold-down rear seat in sportsroof models make it almost a practical pony car and the trunk is upholstered with a correct plaid mat with a matching cover for the spare tire assembly.
The engine is a stout M-code 351 Cleveland V8, which was rated at 300 horsepower and an impressive 385 pounds of torque thanks to 11:1 compression and a 4-barrel carburetor. The Cleveland motors also feature oversized canted valves and intake ports, so they’re happy at high RPM yet make great low-end torque. Rebuilt to stock specs, it runs great and pulls the relatively lightweight Mach 1 with real enthusiasm. It’s also a capable handler without a big block’s worth of cast iron over the front end, it makes awesome Mustang sounds thanks to a custom exhaust with high-flow mufflers and unique square exhaust tips that fit in the original cut-outs just right. It’s detailed correctly, too, with Ford Blue engine enamel, a factory Shaker air cleaner assembly with reproduction decals, and finned aluminum valve covers with their distinctive Cleveland shape. It’s equipped with high-flow code ‘4’ heads (correct for a 4-barrel M-code engine), a factory Autolite ignition system, and original exhaust manifolds. Of course, power steering and power disc brakes are part of the deal, too, making this Mustang very easy to live with.
Underneath it’s very clean with what appear to be original floors, solid rockers with their factory spot welds still visible, and no signs of previous damage. The FMX 3-speed automatic transmission clicks through the gears without any issues and is always ready to drop down a gear to let the deep-breathing 351 do its thing. It’s punchy around town, but thanks to 3.00 gears in back, it’s also a comfortable highway cruiser. You’ll note that there are new brakes up front, fresh shocks at all four corners, and a new gas tank hanging out back, so it doesn’t need anything to start having fun. Magnum 500 wheels are always the right choice and carry staggered 235/60/15 front and 255/60/15 rear radials that really fill the fenders.
Documentation includes a Marti Report confirming that this is a real-deal Mach 1.
The Mach 1 with a 351 Cleveland engine is one of the best all-around performers of the era. It’s also drop-dead gorgeous, with the right combination of classic styling and aggressive details. Fun to drive, always popular at shows, and nicely finished, this is a low-maintenance, high-entertainment Mustang that’s ready to rock. Call today!
