1977 Ford F-250 Highboy Ranger XLT original paint high desert survivor barn find
1977 Ford F-250
For sale: Original survivor 1977 Ford F-250 4x4 Ranger XLT Highboy from the high desert of central Montana, never seen salt. Last of the true highboys in the most desirable year, with divorced NP205 transfer case and heavy duty "big hub" front end. Factory part-time 4wd, not the cheesy 70s Ford full time system. Very hard to find a part-time/hubs highboy with automatic transmission. 400 engine with power steering and power disc brakes. Only two owners for the last 40 years. Purchased new in Anaconda, and lived life out in the sagebrush and prickly pear cactus country. Used primarily by an older gentleman for fishing, hunting, and hauling firewood. Always well maintained. He sold to second owner in Hamilton, Montana that I purchased it from. Truck has a few cool "day 2" modifications, otherwise very stock and original. Original owner added dual spots, PTO Ramsay winch, 8 track stereo, and window tint. Later he upgraded to a 1978 tilt column. Have the original paperwork including the manuals, warranty paperwork, factory recall letter, and even the newspaper ad for the truck the original owner clipped out and saved. Factory Ford "Compass" topper (deluxe version with sliding windows and screens) and original jack, handle, and lug wrench. Original numbers matching buck tags still in place on cowl and box. 160k miles, but drives like 60k. Engine was rebuilt and it's a tight and nice driving original truck. I'll do my best to describe it below, please see additional detail pics including underside at linked Photobucket album and YouTube video.
Exterior: Original paint with a couple small touch ups, still shines well. Straight truck with only a few dents/dings as shown in pics. Roads aren't salted here, and truck is very dry. Underside looks super nice with only minimal surface rust, cab mounts and drop-offs very solid. Factory assembly line paint swipes still visible on front axle. Floors look great from underneath. One small rust spot on splash area of apron near rear bumper from mud coming off wheel - I had to look a long time to find it. Of course we don't see frame rot out here in the dry west. There is some very light surface rust inside box where scratched from use, and wheel wells and bed rails are dented from firewood(see pic without liner). Factory topper is in good condition with a few extra holes for boat rack that have been filled and paint touched up in those spots. Glass is good except windshield has a crack. Grille surround is nice, so there's $600 you don't have to spend. A few dings in the racetrack moldings at rear of box, see detail pics in linked Photobucket album. **Aftermarket wheels and 285 BFG tires shown are not included, they are off another truck. This truck will ship with the original steel wheel and stock size Toyo tires in good condition(as seen in one pic). If you like the style of the aftermarket mag wheels, they are American Outlaw in 16 x 7 and are available new for $95 each** Very nice looking truck that will garner accolades at Cars N Coffee, Home Depot, or Steak N Shake.
Interior: Original in very presentable condition for a nice driver. Passenger door panel has a chip, a few cracks in original seat upholstery under the blanket cover. Headliner is sagging on one corner, needs re-glue, I've got it pinned up. A few small hairline cracks in original dash pad - not noticeable. Original carpet is worn under driver floor mat. Nice tight truck that has a low mile "feel" driving it. Doors close like a bank vault with one finger. It's very hard to duplicate that original "feel" on a truck that's been used hard and then taken apart and re-done. As far as I know, everything works - lights, all gauges, heater, wipers, radio, windows and door locks, parking brake, etc.
Mechanical: Starts, runs, and drives, and stops well. No noises, smoke or major leaks and it's got great oil pressure. Jump in and go. 77 is the last and best year for highboys, with the open-knuckle disc brake front end, and power steering and brakes that the earlier trucks don't have. This one also has tilt wheel and automatic transmission. Truck was well cared for and maintained, whatever was needed was done professionally. Original 400 engine was tired when I got the truck, so I had a rebuilt 400(rebuild tag pictured), out of another 77 F250 professionally swapped in. Not sure of exact mileage but it runs strong.4x4 works, I tested it in high and low range. I upgraded to a new aluminum radiator this summer. PTO winch (transfer case driven) was pulled out to fix a broken mounting bolt and never reinstalled. It will be included with truck when it leaves. Just a solid old truck that will get you there and back. These era Ford trucks are anvil-tough and pretty much indestructible, however old trucks do need work from time to time, so if you haven't messed with vintage vehicles, adjust your expectations accordingly.
Pricing/Misc:73-79 Ford trucks are listed as one of the top ten future collectible vehicles by Hagerty and others. I personally sold a very similar 75 F250 Highboy for $13k right here on eBay last year. This truck is NO RESERVE and will sell. Title is clear and in my name. Truck runs and drives fine, but flying in and driving it home isn't really advisable, as Montana is a huge and remote state with poor cell coverage. Truck can stay here for 30 days after auction end, after that $100 per month storage will be due. Buyer needs to bind coverage on the truck as I will cancel my insurance upon sale. Again, truck comes with stock steel wheels and OEM size tires shown in pic without topper, not the aluminum wheels and 285 BFG tires shown in most of the pics.
Please check with your wife and banker before bidding. If you win this auction, you own the truck, and need to pay for it per the terms below. Thank you!
