1968 Ford Torino
Spring is here and the weather is warming up. Just how much fun would it be to gather your crew and hop into this 1968 Ford Torino convertible? A thorough rotisserie restoration has left it looking great, and with a fresh motor under the hood, it's ready to hit the road and provide miles of good times and open-air adventure.
Named after the Italian city of Torin - referred to at one time as the "Italian Detroit" - the Torino was released as Ford's premium-equipped intermediate offering. It looks every bit the part, carrying a very sharp candy apple red paint job sitting underneath a strong clearcoat that provides a great, wet-looking shine. When it came time for reassembly, it was done right - you can see the evidence in the clean lines separating its body panels from front to back, and doors, hood and deck lid that open and close with the same smoothness as when they were first put in place in the factory. Ford celebrated the Torino's release by creating a newly designed recessed front grille with a pair of horizontal twin headlights and it's in great shape here, as are its bumpers and very clean badging. For protection from the elements, the powered white vinyl convertible top is in great form, raising into place with just the flick of a switch and offering a clear glass window in back. Should the sun re-emerge, lower it back down and cover it with the included boot for a finished, parade-worthy appearance.
A very appealing off-white vinyl interior called "Parchment" sits inside the doors, providing a great contrast to the bright red of the exterior and offering plenty of comfort and space as you embark on your journeys. The wide-backed front bucket seats are luxuriously padded and straddle a center console that's in impressive condition. Your backseat passengers will have plenty of room at their disposal as they take their position on the bench seat - owing to the Torino's sizable wheelbase, even tall passengers can ride in comfort. Beyond the stock steering wheel is a great looking black dash area, with four sizable, round gauges in its instrument cluster - one containing a rare factory tachometer - and a level, clean dash pad above. Just below you'll find a retro style AM/FM stereo, with auxiliary ports to provide plenty of audio options. A full size spare sits in the spacious trunk area, whose wheel wells and hinges match the liquidy shine of the exterior.
Fresh V8 power sits under the hood in the form of a 351-cubic inch Windsor V8. Rebuilt not long ago, decked out in proper Ford blue and carrying a 4-barrel carb on top, it's running at its best and pairs with a 3-speed automatic C4 transmission to provide strong acceleration and secure shifts. The engine bay itself is very tidy - reflecting so much care that the red cap of the new distributor shows no road grime and even the label on its shock tower remains perfectly legible. By many accounts, Ford's power steering was well-ahead of the competition, offering a more precise feel, and here it teams with power brakes to provide a low-effort driving experience. The undercarriage is straight and solid, with floorpans that show effects from the elements and suspension components that appear well-looked after. This great looking vintage Ford sits on a set of 15" chrome Magnum rims wrapped with Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T tires.
