1985 Ferrari Dino Electric Replica

This sleek little sports car is a rather unique find that offers both an iconic look from the past and modern tech that fits right in with today's sensibilities. It's a Dino Ferrari replica based on a VW chassis, which is a neat thing all by itself, but it's also powered by a rather impressive electric motor that gives surprising performance to match its low-slung sports car look.It wouldn't be quite right to call this a kit car, but it was assembled on a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle chassis using a body that was laid up sometime in the late 1960s. The look is timeless and as recent auction results would suggest, Dinos are red hot. It's low and sleek and the proportions are just about right for a vehicle designed to go fast. It's old-school fiberglass, so it's tough stuff, and it was refinished at some point years ago, so it's not fresh and perfect but has a proper look for its age. There are a few touch-ups and some fading, which is typical of red paints, but for a car that's going to get driven a lot because it's so much fun, well, it's just about right. Experts will spot the 1969 Camaro faux velocity stacks in the rear deck and rest assured, this sucker is still 100% street legal. If you want to attract attention, there aren't many better ways to do it than this. The interior is 1970s racing car cool, with body-hugging buckets and a minimalist approach. Everything is black, which makes maintenance easy, and things like the carpets and seat covers remain in great condition. A thick steering wheel talks directly to your palms, making this sports car feel agile, and while there's a gear shift in the middle of the transmission tunnel, it's more of a switch than a shifter today. The gauges are a mixture of dials intended to monitor an air-cooled VW engine and modern electronics, including a START/STOP button. It's also been upgraded with a Sony AM/FM/CD stereo system, power door locks, and a monitoring system for the electric motor that tied into a smart key. All the electronics were professionally built, this isn't some homemade special, and it has a very polished feel once you're behind the wheel. There's not much storage space, what with the batteries sitting in the trunk, but then again, this isn't exactly a car built for long road trips. What it is built for is explosive performance around town. The beer-keg like electric motor is from an electric dragster and is currently rated at 800 amps, although it can handle up to 2000 amps for truly entertaining performance. The important thing to remember is that it puts out 100% of its torque at 0 RPM, so it lunges off the line and cruises easily at 60 MPH and offers a top speed somewhere close to 100 MPH. The fun lasts 30-40 if you're really stomping on it, but driven gently, it can go more than 100 miles on a charge, which is kind of impressive if you think about it. There are also two Optima batteries to run the stereo and other accessories, and the control system comes from the Electric Car Company, who seem to know a thing or two about making these kinds of things user-friendly. The suspension is agile, the brakes are up to the task of stopping it, and the 15-inch tires with staggered 215/60/15 front and 255/60/15 rear performance radials are plenty big enough to make it stick like glue to the pavement. With just test and tune miles on the professional build, this is a cool alternative to something like a used Smart car. Efficient and fun, it puts an eco-friendly face on an old favorite. Call today!
