Up for sale is a 1979 Datsun 280ZX Coupe with the 5 speed manual. I purchased this over a year ago from a Kraft Auction in North Carolina.. Sight unseen.. paid over $10,500.00 including shipping. Unfortunately, the auction company didn't say anything about rust. The car was misrepresented or at the least the auction company didn't do any inspections of what they were selling.. The car is originally from Pennsylvania.
The car shows 29K miles, but I suspect 129K. It is a dark, dark grey metallic, almost a black metallic with tan cloth. The paint appears to be a decent older respray in the original color? Overall, it appears very nice and is by all rights, a nice looking "driver". The interior shows well for an original and being 30+ years old. There is some aging in some areas, but decent. There is a small wear hole on the passenger seat side bolster. There are 2 or 3 small cracks in the dash, but comes with a dash cover. Overall, the interior is nice and original.
The car runs and drives reasonable, butI wouldn't drive it too far. Unfortunately, for all of it's nice cosmetics, the underside chassis and body are pretty rough. It is a Pennsylvania car originally and the salt has taken it's toll. Amazingly, the hood, doors, glass, and rear hatch fit very well and work well. It will need someMAJORrust repair. There are areas where someone used spray foam and tar to cover and make what isn't there appear to be there. The body has rust at the bottom of the windshield and various other locations especially low down like the rockers and sills. I suspect there is some filler under the current paint. The pictures minimize what is actually wrong. It's hard to get pictures under a car without a lift. It does have some structural (frame members) and floor pan damage. Previous owner attempted to "patch" these areas with foam and tar of some kind. Addition photos upon request...
From a basic inspection, it appears that most everything in the car works! The radio, however, buzzs (could be the antenna). The a/c compressor clicks on but I can't tell you it is really cooling. All lights and signals work. Nice gauges, all functioning along with the warning chimes. Engine sounds reasonable and runs decent. Does not overheat. The brakes feel ok. Does not leak any fluids at this time. The exhaust sounds good and solid. The condition of the brakes and lines have not been assessed. The tires appear newer and in good condition. I think this was a well cared for car that spent too much time in Pennsylvania.
All in all, this appears to be a really nice looking car with major rust and safety issues... Therefore, The car is being sold as a parts car or ambitious restoration project, not to be currently used on public highways.I am sure a confident and well seasoned restorer could repair this car, but it would be a bit involved for most garage mechanics.
It comes with anCLEARIndiana titlefrom the owner of Kraft Auctioneers and is signed over to me on the back. I will also give a California DMV official bill of sale from me to the new owner.
