A Rare and Fantastic L29 With Numbers-Matching Engine

The Cord L-29 was initially introduced was produced to fill the gap between the low-priced Auburn and the top-of-the-mark Duesenberg J in the Cord Corporation line of cars. This was the first American front-wheel drive car to be offered to the public, its drive system was borrowed from the Indianapolis 500-dominating racers. This allowed a lower body silhouette, producing a distinctive and pleasing front end physique that appealed to coachbuilders. The L29 Cord was described by its makers as, "...the first production car with a unit powerplant, engine, transmission, differential and front brakes in one assembly."

Luxurious trimmings, a rakish stance and grand stature provide this Cord with a road presence rarely seen today. The distinctive Maroon bodywork is bisected by a striking Black beltline and edge details that accentuate the elegant bodylines of the Cord, while a tan canvas top pairs well to the matching trimmed cabin. This particular car, #2925737, continues to benefit nicely from a very well-maintained restoration with proper fit and finish in full evidence. It retains all body tags and identification plaques throughout, as well as the internal wood and steel structures. Its overall presence is quite remarkable.

The engine compartment displays its original numbers-matching L-head, Lycoming eight-cylinder and transmission. The motor recently received a 2016 engine-out major service and tune, including top end gaskets, plugs, timing chain, fluids rubbers intake and brake overhaul. Details and finish continue to the chassis, which presents the same mechanical and cosmetic condition. The dual sidemount spares on chrome wire wheels complement the Cord's elegant Art Deco style. Additional accessories include cowl lights, wide whitewall tires luggage rack. The L29 certainly is an unparalleled example of American Pre-War opulence and mechanical ingenuity.
