1970 Chevrolet Chevelle 454 / TKO 600 5 speed / Project Car 2 door / Convertible Frame with Lots of Parts - No Reserve!
For sale is a Chevelle I have owned for the past 24 years. As you can see from my 24 years of perfect feedback on eBay, I am a very honest seller and will give you as much information as I can to make sure of a smooth sale. Please do not bid if you cannot give me a deposit within 48 hours and arrange a flatbed tow truck to pick up the car at your expense within a week (after sale) along with full payment in cash or a verified cashiers check. I am a high school teacher and can only respond to questions after 3:30 on school days. Please view all pictures and ask all questions before bidding.
This Chevelle is located in Northport NY 11768 which is 30+ minutes away from my home. It has been off the road for 22 years and will be sold with the registration and a bill of sale (normal in NY for a car this age no title is issued).
This is a project car and is not drivable at the moment.
It is currently on blocks and will roll, but will have to put on a flatbed tow truck to winch it in place and strap it down. Tires are 18 years old and the parking brake cables under the car are not installed (parking brake will not work). It has been modified from stock and the sheet metal was not done to showroom status. Many exterior areas need to be redone, but the shell and chassis are in good shape and all the drivetrain parts are included.
I cannot get the engine running for many reasons listed below, however the engine / transmission were never driven a mile after break-in so I am sure they just need a lot of TLC and a few parts installed which will be included with the car (water pump, fuel pump, alternator, new starte, pulleys and belts)
The history below reads like a book, so if you want the summary - this is a project car with lots of potential and parts, however will need a lot of work to get it restored back to the way it was 54 years ago. Priced to sell quick.
History: Bought it running as a 307 Powerglide Malibu in 2000 from a family member who owned it since 1979. It was a good candidate for an SS clone since the malibu and SS trims had the same vin# starting with 13637. I never had an accident and I don’t believe the car ever had any major damage.
In 2003 the interior was taken out and the body was taken off the frame. I replaced the frame with a boxed convertible frame from a donor Cutlass, replaced bushings with PST poly for the front suspension and body. I did a front disk conversion rebuilt the rear brakes and added new a power brake booster and master cylinder and newer style proportioning and distribution valves.
In 2004 I did as much sheet metal work to get the rust off of the car and then stripped, etched, primed and painted the car to preserve the metal while I worked on it. Sheet metal was done at the level to get the car to the strip but not the showroom, It needs work. Paint went well up to the final coat which did not have enough reducer and ended up with a lot of orange peel. It was AzkoNobel single stage poly shot with a Binks 2000 so I was really disappointed with the results, but I planned on re-shooting it at a later date that I never was able to get to. I didn't end up sanding it and used it as a protective layer since I was going to school to become an automotive educator 6 hours away at the time and did not know when I would get back to it.
In 2005 I started working 3 jobs and had a 454 built for it (specs below), and Installed a Tremec TKO 600 5 speed transmission that was filled with synchromesh but never driven. Lakewood steel bellhousing. The car was originally a 2 speed auto, so I installed the clutch pedal and z bar, however I still kept the original auto steering column.
Engine Specs: 454 Mercruiser block (no serial #) bored 60 over and built with ARP bolts, moly rings 9:1 TRW Hyper Pistons, Custom Comp Cams 270/278, 226/234 .544” .564”, machined to handle over 450hp by Reliable in Ronkonkoma. I am pretty sure I had cross bolted mains installed, however I cannot find the receipt. Merlin Iron Oval Heads with a 2.30” Intake Valve. Performer 2.0 Intake and Demon 725cfm Carb. The engine went through a break in fine but since the car never was put back together it was never driven. For some reason the stock rockers slightly glance at the valve cover (seen inside the cover) at full lift. There are many inexpensive fixes for this including hammering the cover straighter, however my plan was to switch to a milder lower lift cam anyway and I have a XE256 (.48” lift) and lifters that I will include with the car. I do also have the original 307 block (see picture) if you want to sell the engine and do a matching numbers build.
In 2006 I started to set the car up as a street strip car and put in tubular adjustable arms in the rear and locking aircraft grade bolts where needed. The car was simplified with a manual gearbox and electric fans and a new 4 core radiator was added for cooling. I took out the heater core, and riveted and filled a metal plate at the firewall. It was an AC car, but I do not have those parts. I do have the power steering box and pump, and interior heater core if you want them.
I modified the original dash and dash harness and added Autometer gauges. I also got rid of the bench front seat and put in temporary leather front buckets. Original front seats disappeared. I just recently took out the dash and was hoping to put in a reproduction dash, gauges and harnesses since they are readily available. Currently the gauges are packed in a box and I can hopefully bolt the modified dash back in place for the sale and transport. New tires were installed on vintage aluminum rims.
In 2007 the car was put into storage and I sealed the intake with a plate over the carb and plugged the distributor. I stored the carb and distributor and wires inside until 2022 when I put them back on the car and took them back in in the winter.
From 2007-2019 the car sat in a garage and had items stored on top of it. As I took a job teaching, got married, bought a small house and had kids. I didn't have time to get back to it as it was stored 30 minutes away and I had a 100 year old house to keep me busy. In 2019 It was moved to a temporary outdoor carport which motivated me to either sell it or get back to it.
2022 - I cleaned and tried to start up the car and realized that the alternator, fuel pump, water pump and starter had to be replaced (new parts are included in sale) and most likely the fuel tank and lines had to be replaced. I decided at that point to order a milder cam to make it more of a 350 hp street car, which is included, however I never got to put it in.
2023 - I started working on the car again and ordered the parts (included) to get the engine running. The only thing I accomplished was to get the new gas tank and sending unit installed.
Currently I feel like it deserves to go to a new owner that will restore it to its past glory. I have tried to get to work on the car but my kids keep me pretty busy. The car not being close to my home was the main obstacle.
November 2024 - What the Chevelle Needs and Included Extra Parts:
Known Issues:
Many small body dents and surface rust and chips from storage / panels moving or the car cover rubbing (see pictures)
Needs replacement front and rear windshields. All 4 door glass panels are fine. Door and trunk lock cylinders need to be replaced with the included new ones and keys (pictured).
I really cannot take pictures of the passenger side. It is in better shape than the drivers side which is pictured.
The lower cowl areas (behind the lower front quarters in the engine bay) need to be re-welded in order to secure the front quarters in place. The panel shifted and I had to put a 4x4 between the cowl and the driver front quarter panel to open the door. I have the new inner structural sheet metal patch panels in boxes (pictured), but not the outer cover panel nor the trapped nuts. Currently makeshift L brackets are holding the front quarters at the bottom near the door.
The rocker below the drivers door was welded with a temporary sheet metal panel after I cut out all the rust. I planned on re-doing it, so I did not weld the bottom. I do not have a replacement however they are readily available.
The drivers side lower quarter patch panel will most likely have to be redone or touched up in order to get it aligned with the door.
The drivers side rear quarter patch buckled from the heat of welding and needs a little TLC bodywork to get the lines correct. It will be fine for a driver with some hammering and bondo work, but not for a show car. All 4 quarters have had patch panels welded on at some point, the passenger side was done the best.
Trunk and hood need some TLC to get them re-aligned
Rear Window frame has some rust holes and needs some pins for the trim re-brazed. I never had the stainless trim for the rear window. The rear window is not attached properly and will be boxed up for transport, but I would replace it if you could since it has DA sander scratches in it from before I owned it.
No front windshield, but I do have the trim for it.
The roof has had Items stored and dropped on it and has to be hammered and filled in many small areas.
The floor and transmission tunnel have to be finished and welded in as shown.
The stock plastic wheel wells are cracked, but will most likely still work (see pictures)
The transmission crossmember needs to be re-drilled and bolted since the transmission was not a stock option and the stock bolt hole options do not line up. Not an issue if you plan on changing the transmission to a stock option.
The engine has a seized water pump, and most likely a bad fuel pump and starter. I will include upgraded parts if the car is purchased for the BIN price.
I have no clue if the headers need to be replaced after sitting for 20 years.
I have most of the malibu trim, however some of it has been dented in storage.
Fabric and rug interior parts will need to be purchased, headliner needs replacement
Chipmunks have been leaving acorns all over the engine block and exhaust and I am guessing you will find them in odd places that need to be cleaned out. Luckily I have not seen any chewed wires.
The engine timing needs to be re-adjusted since I have taken the distributor and carb out for storage over winter.
Parking brake cables are not intact (no working parking brake) so the car will have to be strapped for transport.
Good points:
I just replaced the gas tank and sending unit recently and new stainless lines and clips are included.
Optima Yellow top Battery from 2014 that has been barely used.
I gapped and installed new plugs in 2023 before finding the water pump was seized.
I have a few parts that will help speed up the build that I will include - XE256 cam and lifters, fuel pump, Jegs Hi Torque mini Starter, Aluminum Pulley Kit and Belt all shown in pictures
Custom Denny's Driveshaft (missing one u-joint bearing) never installed, but the box got wet and one end has surface rust. U- joint brackets in a tackle box full of bolts (see picture) Matching transmission yoke has been seated in the transmission to seal it.
I tried to keep most trim pieces in tact, but some are really showing the 54 years of age (see pictures)
Brake lines have been upgraded to stainless with modern proportioning valves.
Exhaust is Borla stainless
