Cargo, Van, Camper, Work, Boogie, Custom, Roof Rack, Rack, 1987
1987 Chevrolet Astro
The odometer is in kilometers: 174665km = 108532m
Here's the Canadian VIN: 1gcdm15z0hb162505
The car has been lovingly restored by the previous owner and under my two year tenure I've been equally loving and caring to it.
The car runs great and sounds even better (a deep thoaty rumble that gives you chills every time you crank it over). She's proven very reliable and worthy of long road trips. When I bought this black beauty I drove it all the way from Vancouver to SLC - that's 1000 miles. No prob. Since then she's been on many a long road trip. No probs.
Clean, simple and practical with a subtle flair. That calls out to a certain type. If you're reading this far, you know what I mean.
I've been using this mostly as a daily driver but the last year of ownership it's mostly sat in the my driveway (I've 2 other autos that are better for my kids) - I've only put a few thousand miles on it over two years. Despite the infrequent use over the last year it always roars to life on the first crank. I think this has to do with the restoration done by the original owner - it was extensive.
Also, he had a degree in automotive design and did a whole heap of things that make this van truly custom and unique from the inside and out. I don't really know enough about cars to enumerate (but I'll try below). The long and the short of it is a powder coated rust free chasis and a rebuilt bored engine (increased power and torque) he then Frankensteined a GMC Safari nose with a Cadillac grill to the front and added Cadillac lights to the back. Coupled with wide racing tires, side pipes, no cadillic converter (did I say this baby rumbles??), you've got a van that looks and sounds badass.
I paid 10.5k for this as I wanted a unique van that looked cool, could haul gear and equipment, be decent for camping and most important would "just work". I once had a Delica that cost more in repairs than what it cost to buy and basically was always out of commision. I was determined to avoid that pitfall again and this old girl came through and has always run, no issues, ever. Exactly what I needed and wanted.
Also, let's be real, all other Safaris and Astros or older vans that I've seen look aweful, have high mileage and usually need some major repair. I'm asking 5500 OBO but I truly believe this belongs in a higher priced echeleon.
But I don't want to make that case today, take the win I'm offering here - bust out your cassette tapes (my Mo' Emo and Butt Rock mixes will be included, to get you rolling) and let your inner machismo surge as you rumble along the highways of life, in a true analogue, elevated, connected state - man, machine and road becoming as one - achieving a vibrational state of existence that would make a new age, spiritualist, guru, lament their inferior, unaligned, nature.
