1992 Chevrolet Camaro RS
If you grew up in the '80s like I did, this was the car you wanted to help you get the pretty girl, embarrass the stupid bully, and impress the legendary Jon Bon Jovi. Sure, all that might have been in my imagination, but back then it truly seemed like nothing could beat a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro RS out on the street, with an awesome combination of traditional muscle car acceleration and impressive handling. Featuring a thumping, fuel-injected 383 Stroker V8, a 5-speed manual, slick bright yellow paint, and a comfortable custom A/C interior, this 3rd generation RS is the new kid on the block in the vintage muscle car market, but it's definitely arrived with a bang.Repainted in a retina-melting shade of bright yellow, which is probably the best possible color on a hot car like this, the finish was completed 10 years ago and included a set of painted-on white stripes that give this final-year 3rd gen a modern, streamlined look. A color-matched grille and lip kit was added as well, and with that decision this RS is now an ideal throwback to the 80s that really looks like a million bucks on the streets today. According to the car's vehicle history report it has never been wrecked, and there are no signs that it's ever been rusty either thanks to a long-life spent in sunny Texas, and as a slick-roof, non-T-top car it feels tight and well composed. That's all proof that this car has led a very easy life, unlike so many of its siblings which were often victims of their low price and high performance. The result is a very vivid presentation that really turns heads. The ground effects remain in good shape with minimal road rash, and it still carries its original fog lamps up front that match the bright, clear lenses on all the lights. Seriously, if you're familiar with these cars, you know their fate but this one seems to have escaped and instead is on its way to being a legitimate show-off item in someone's prize collection. Things like the clear and tinted glass, the weather seals, and all the badges remain bright, crisp, and in great shape.
With an upgraded interior that features later-model leather bucket seats that were swapped in from a Firebird, this Camaro is a lot more upscale than its price tag would suggest, both then and now. The interior is in very good condition, particularly considering its age, and it has a comfortable, welcoming look that still manages to be very sporty. That firm leather holds you in place during spirited driving, and with a long list of comfort and convenience options this one is a no-compromises V8 muscle car. Cold R134a A/C, power windows and locks, a tilt steering column, cruise control, and a Pioneer AM/FM/CD/AUX stereo all make the RS feel like the top-of-the-line car that it is. The center console houses most of the controls, plus the shifter for the 5-speed manual transmission, which is just a short reach from the leather-wrapped wheel. The gauges are in good shape, with the yellow marking matching the exterior paint, and there's also a big AutoMeter Monster tachometer and rev light above the center stack that keeps an eye on the throttle spikes. The 25th Anniversary badge on the glove compartment reminds everyone that this is a special year-model, and the back seat is in excellent shape that folds down to make the cargo area downright massive.
GM's 5.0 liter V8 with Tuned-Port Injection was the standard engine on the Camaro, but it simply wasn't enough power for these owners. A beefed-up 383 Stroker V8 was augmented with ZZ4 fast-burning heads and dropped in like it always belonged, and the big horsepower it packs provides plenty of pop in the lightweight coupe. It's topped with the same TPI system and intake manifold it would've had stock, and it if it wasn't for the aftermarket cone filter and Edlebrock headers, you'd think it was completely untouched from the factory. Fortunately, it's been very well attended to, with a new radiator, alternator, distributor, starter, fuel pump, and upgraded R134a A/C system that all ensure this Camaro is ready for the modern road. Turn the key and it fires quickly, settling into a cackling V8 idle from the full 3-inch exhaust that suits the flashy muscle car perfectly. Lots of fresh maintenance parts under the hood means that this one has been loved, and thanks to a lifetime in warm, dry Texas, the chassis is impressively tidy for being almost 30 years old. 5-star Camaro alloys look absolutely killer, and they wear fresh 225/50/15 performance radials all-around with plenty of grip.
Simply put, this Camaro RS is a very nice, flashy, high-impact driver that still commands respect on the street and will surely have a future in the collector car world. Call today!
