1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

In 1938 The Chevrolet Motor company offered an upscale version of the Master (AKA the HB) and The Master Deluxe (AKA the HA) sedan. This was a popular car selling over 302,000 units, so a lot of examples survive. First popular with hot rodders because of the availability of parts, and the ease of replacing the engine, many versions and interpretations survive today.

This example of the 1938 HA sedan has had many modifications and owned by the consigner for the past 30 years. Due to being confined to a wheelchair, this car has been modified to be driven with hand controls, which can be easily removed. The build reads like a who's who of bowtie parts, and has created a unique rodded version of the 38 HA Master Deluxe sedan.

Exterior
Retaining its original shape and design right out of 1938 most of this car, save for the rear fenders and running boards which are fiberglass, remains as metal from 1938. All bathed in 1993 Mercedes-Benz Red, with well minded gaps just some minor inclusions on the doors, fenders and a small rust bubble seen. Stainless steel polished to the nines is making up the front and rear bumpers, and the remaining chrome is all excellent. From the windswept V style tall grille, to the headlight bezels, to the locking driver's door latch and trunk latch. More trimmings for the cowled hood vents on their borders, and the center of the hood which goes right up the center of the split windshield. Hanging off the rear are LED taillights on red stalks, and dual chromed exhaust tips peeking out from the trunk lid below the bumper. Also noted of interest is etched glass that has been tinted, some graphics at the rear of the doors and into the back quarters, and polished Billet aluminum wheels...15x6 for the front and 15x8 on the back.

Interior
Shades of gray for all interior surfaces, gray two tone vinyl with a swoop for the doors with manual cranks which are smooth as silk. Recently installed Wise Guys bucket 2 tone gray seats with dark inserts and light bolsters, have been adorned with Juliano's retractable seat belts for the front passengers. An original cloth bench sits in back and consigner states he has material in vinyl to recover the rear bench if you want to (although it presents very nicely). A tilt column topped with a Grant steering wheel sits in front of the buckets, and directly behind is a red painted dash. This sports a Billet Specialties brushed aluminum gauge panel with white faced VDO gauges inserted. The original chromed badged dash middle is still on and houses an ashtray. Some lights and switches have been added as well as Hot Rod A/C and heat systems. Beautiful gray headliner floats above all this two tone, and recently installed dark gray carpet covers the floors.

Drivetrain
A circa 1969 to 1979 350ci V8 with a Holley single 4-barrel 600 CFM carburetor and Holley intake atop and a 3-speed automatic TH350 all shines brightly in the engine bay. Polished rust free surfaces and bolt ons help with the overall appearance as well, which is very nice. A Nova 10-bolt rear gladly accepts power from the mill and transmission and makes the rear tires spin!

Undercarriage
A stock 1938 rust free frame provides the base and bolted on is a litany of upgrades. A rebuilt Mustang II IFS and power rack and pinion steering, driven by a GM power steering pump. Power brakes with a firewall mounted booster, Corvette master cylinder stopping Ford Granada 11-inch disc brakes upfront, and Chevy Nova Drums for the back. A 17-gallon polyethylene gas tank, and stainless steel Flowmaster mufflers and pipes have been installed.

Drive-Ability
A great meticulous build, well thought out and a drive of this car shows that. It lit right up and on the test track which threw everything it had at this car, was handled with ease. A comfortable cruiser, and the hand controls were interesting, but can be easily removed.

A meticulously planned out car in a way that every part was made to be sure to be the best it could be for this build. The car sounds beautiful, runs and shifts smoothly, and is comfortable to sit in to boot! A turnkey tasteful Hot Rod with all the trimmings.
