New Paint and Interior/350ci V8 TH350 Tranny/Dynamat Bedliner/4 x 4
1976 Chevrolet K-20
1976 Chevrolet K20
With the "K" denoting 4 wheel drive, and 20 denoting a 3/4 ton pickup, the truck is commonly known as the square body. K's were a bit beefier on the spring front than the "C" (1/2 ton), and the "K" had beefier brakes. These trucks were different than anything else out at the time and despite being called square, were aerodynamically efficient.
For consignment a truck with a bit of history. It started out as a firetruck in Ohio, then was sold off, and some work was done, mainly on the installation of a new bed from a camper (hence the hold downs on both sides front and back of the sides of the bed). Some new fenders, and beefier engine and transmission, and an interior redux, and give you this high roller with knobby tires, a lined bed, and 4 wheel power and ground clearance to climb nearly anything, all the while doing it in retro style. Lots of "ands" in there!
Exterior
With its new bed now spray lined (Amazon Dynamat) for toughness and durability, and straight exterior panels bathed in nice red, we are high and mighty on this build. Add in a chromed Summit Racing bed installed roll bar, some hold downs, a shiny "B" pillar supporting the roof and rear slider window, and big mirrors in chrome, we are now updated. The hood, now fiberglass has dual rear facing gray striped scoops which carry the gray to the roof line. Some chrome trimming for the front wheel well surrounds, and the original grille with an extra LMC grille if you want to install it provided with this truck. New 31 x 16.5 knobbies which still have their mold nipples on them are now on all 4 corners. Also bringing up the front and rear are new bumpers, nice and mirror-like.
Interior
A new seat cover in red crushed velour makes up the single bench on this truck. This is fronted by an original GM square and rectangle design dash recovered in red padded vinyl. Door panels once blue, are now painted in red. Some water damage is on either door at the bottom of the wing windows. A radio unit is installed, but currently not hooked up. Red carpet is on the floors, and a crushed velour headliner to match the bench floats above.
Drivetrain
The original engine has been replaced with a stout 350ci V8 from 1974. This engine has been completely rebuilt, and has headers put on, as well as a 4-barrel carburetor atop. A TH350 transmission and a rebuilt transfer case is strapped to this mill, and puts power to all 4's.
Undercarriage
Although too large for our lift, peering underneath, shows some surface rust, but solid undercarriage and frame, with rebuilt springs for front and rear. Transfer case is solid and non leaking, and exhaust is good.
Drive-Ability
After managing to climb inside, she fired right up with a roar from the exhaust, and I was off to my mudslinging glory and surprise. She handles well, stops on a dime, and steers easily. On a sharp right turn something seemed to rub, but I never could figure out exactly what it was. Also, when pressing the accelerator firmly to the floor, it took a bit for the 4-barrel carb to kick in. Radio is inop, and Ad/C compressor will come with this truck but is not installed.
High off the ground, higher power, and some new paint and interior, and this former firefighter is now posed to take you to new heights, and lows, all in 4x4 style, making some noise, and all looking like 1976. I picture this truck rolling fast down a dirt road, flags flying from the roll bar, and making some dust! Our test track does not have any dirt, so it remained a fantasy, but I did manage to have it go fast.
