1970 Chevrolet El Camino

1970 Chevrolet El Camino

Back in the 1950's a woman from an Australian Farm requested a car that she could go to church on Sunday, and haul pigs on Monday. The Idea was hatched for a new kind of transportation, that being the multi-use vehicle. GM's version was the El Camino aptly named after the Spanish "The Way".

2 years ago, this El Camino was the recipient of a comprehensive mechanical update replacing many parts, engine removal, glass beaded bay, and repaint...as well as some performance upgrades. The transmission had a go over and some replacements at this time as well. For consignment a nice all but 40-year-old bowtie classic that is definitely a shower and a goer.

Exterior
A pristine chrome front bumper sits perfectly level below a 2-tier horizontal opening grill. Dual round headlights stare at you and are surrounded by very clean and neat bezels. Sliding our view upward and rearward, a pristine hood flooded with mile deep maroon paint is seen. Straight fenders, door panels and good gaps also flooded with the beautiful maroon make their way back to the truck bed, which is enveloped in a custom rubber liner. Tailgate, rear lights and bumper finish off the body at the aft and are all as nice as the front section. A black vinyl top, looking as new, covers the 2 passenger cabin and black centered US Mag 5 spokes are seen on all 4 corners.

Interior
Not known if it is indeed original, but if you like miles of perfect cloth on your bench seat, swing the vinyl covered door open, slide in, and have you mate scootch over and go for a cruise. If you can make your eye wander from your partner, you'll see a beautiful dash with added Stewart Warner gauges. Take a spin of the steering wheel which drives the power steering. Black carpeting floods the floor and Chevy rubber floor mats add some protection to the carpet. Wonderful gold knobs are attached to the window cranks and add a nice surprise to the overall scheme.

Drivetrain
Comfortably sitting in the gorgeous engine bay is an equally gorgeous mill which comes from a 1974-80 350ci truck. An Edelbrock performer intake with a matching 600 CFM Edelbrock carburetor sits on top. A pair of chromed valve covers throws in some more bling. Exhaling happens through Hedman ceramic coated long tube headers. To keep everything cool an HD aluminum radiator, and an added auxiliary transmission cooler is seen keeping the THM 350 3-speed automatic transmission comfortable.

Undercarriage
Some former but now repaired floorplan rust is seen, but no concerns here. Otherwise surface rust is minimal on a clean undercarriage. Power disc brakes are seen in front, a 12-bolt rear differential, and some rebuilt parts were inserted on the rear suspension.

Here we have a great runner, and even nicer shower for the lone El Camino here at Classic Auto Mall. The last one was here for a short stay as it was expeditiously snapped up. This one is a performer, and runs, drives, plus looks great to boot.
