This truck and I have spent 22 years together, I'm the 3rd owner. In the last 2.5 years I've put very few miles on it, not fair to the truck and I have other projects I'd like to bring to life. I kept every receipt possible for the truck thru the years, especially the engine replacement...they will all go to the new owner.
Bought it from an old painter in 97, it was his work truck in a bit of rough shape. Thru high school in my Jr and Sr year I utilized the Auto Shop to the full extent. Rebuilt the front suspension, swapped in C-30 coils to lift the nose a bit, brakes, wheel bearings, door hinge bushings, alternator, P/S pump, steering box, motor mounts, master cylinder, etc. This truck towed our Homecoming float both Jr and Sr year, and I used it to complete my Boy Scout Eagle Project. The truck has all original sheetmetal shy the right front fender and bumper, my idiot mechanic fender-bender'd it in '03. Weather stripping replaced on driver door in '05 from Tuckers Classic Auto Parts, I have all weather stripping for passenger door in storage that will go with the truck. I used her for work for a few years along the way; the ladder rack was added in '07 along with A/C compressor replaced, windows tinted, seat reupholstered (West Charleston Upholstery, Las Vegas, NV), and rear suspension replaced (Skip's Spring Service, Las Vegas, NV). In 2013 she was parked due to chronic overheating issues, the water jackets were corroded beyond use...the old motor was trash.
After returning from an overseas deployment in 2015 I decided to bringing her back to life, best quality for lowest cost possible...I wasn't interested in being a hot rod, just wanted to drive it and wanted the work to be clean. Goodwrench crate 350 and install kit came from Jegs. Intake, heater core, motor/trans mounts, belts, fan, fan clutch, water pump, hoses, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, PCV, torque converter...all replaced. Copper core radiator, carburetor, and transmission were rebuilt. Driveline was built new to replace the undersized unit that came with the truck. All engine hardware and brackets were cleaned and painted prior to reinstallation. It has been tuned by a shop in Flagstaff for the altitude, though it still runs a bit rich.
The truck has a few minor physical and mechanical deficiencies:
-A/C works well despite the leaks inside the dash venting, requires recharging and a pressure switch
-Ignition switch is bad in the column, I've tactfully temp-installed a toggle switch at the bottom of the column until it can be replaced
-Elastic in seat pocket needs to be replaced
-One piece of chrome body trim is missing on right forward side of bed
-There is some light cancer in a few spots: left rear wheelwell at the top center ...right rear wheelwell in the far low rear and the fender support rod is broken at the tab...passenger door lower bottom corner...driver door where the lower jamb meets the door. A desert truck for most its life.
-There's a stack of washers behind the front bumper on the passenger side from the fender-bender repair, looks like the frame horn is tweaked a touch.
-Ladder rack has 2 cracked welds, I use 2 crossed ratchet straps to keep it stable for use.
-CB powers up but does not receive, I expect the antenna coax probably got hot by the exhaust. The holes in the left rear bedside was the first antenna mount location...thought it was a good idea at the time...I was 16, my bad, sorry coach.
-The receiver hitch only lined up with some of the bolt holes when I replaced the home-made hitch in '05 with a Draw-tite Class IV, leading me to believe a trailer jack-knifed or something of such to bring the rear frame horns out of alignment a smidge, so a welding shop finished the installation for me using structural rod.
In 2017 we relocated to small town in northern Arizona where the truck has been mostly parked, her only road time now is the rare trip around the block when weather and time permits. This truck is not perfect, a few have called it a survivor truck...it's mostly the same as it was 22 years ago, it even has the same twin-knob Sony cassette stereo though along the way I found factory cab corner speakers from a wrecking yard to add in. I have treated her as well as I could thru the years, and was never afraid to ask her to put in a day of work. Before anyone asks, I had the seat reupholstered in grey because I was going to change the interior from burgundy to grey...I never got around to that project. Every light works, no LEDs have been installed. Hands down, this is the best riding highway truck I've ever seen and stops on a dime...no extra charge for the standard single-finger steering.
