Description:

1988 Chevrolet Corvette Leather

For sale is one of only two existing 1988 King Of The Hill ZR-1 Protoypes. EX5023, as the EX Tag indicates. This is an original engineering experimental car with an EX tag instead of a standard Vin Tag. The Vin number is stamped on the frame as every production car was. This car has an amazing story from conception to destruction to resurrection. Built in July 1987, is Pilot Line car #048. Original chassis markings reveal this fact in original pictures. There were 25 wide body prototypes built in 1987. 23 of 25 were crushed/cubed. This car was in the UK being used by Lotus for engine development and escaped the cube treatment. GM ordered this special car destroyed. It was taken to a UK salvage yard where it was attempted to be smashed from front to rear with the bucket of a front end loader. While most of the fiberglass bodywork and windshield frame was destroyed, the chassis and door geometry was not effected. EX5023 still retains its original suspension and many original parts. Several parts are hand scribed dated July 87. NOS and 1989 ZR-1 pre-production parts were used to repair this cars original body. A true work of art.
This restored piece of GM ZR-1 history qualifies for the NCRS American Heritage Award. The Phase 2 LT5 engine is rebuilt and programmed by ZR-1/LT5 specialist Marc Haibec. Runs perfectly.
The original date coded 315 Goodyear experimental rear tires are from the 25 cars built in July 87. The sidewalls have "NOT FOR SALE" molded into them by Goodyear. So many prototype parts survived and have been used. Flat dash 8k tach lens is NOS. This car is amazing and represents the very beginning of the ZR-1 Program, which at the time was called King Of The Hill. I have original GM documentation from meetings between Lotus and GM, including the original books from the Go Ahead Meeting in Feb 88.
