Description:
1958 BMW Isetta 300 sliding windows
BMW took notice of this microcar and began talks soon in mid-1954 and bought not just a license to manufacture but the complete Isetta body tooling as well. The first BMW Isetta came to life in April 1955 and was the world's first mass produced car to achieve a fuel consumption of 78 MPG. 1956 was the first full year of production and BMW sold 22,000 Isettas and as the microcar caught on with popularity, BMW saw the opportunity to improve upon its design. The engine was upgraded to a 298-cc four-stroke single cylinder capable of 13hp and 50 mpg at 50 mph. BMW continued their design improvements in late-1956 and the Isetta saw its bubble windows replaced with longer, sliding side windows to help reduce the fishbowl effect of sun shining on the windows. By 1962 BMW had built 161,728 Isettas making it the top-selling, single-cylinder car in the world! This 1958 BMW Isetta 300 with its original 298-cc four stroke engine that produces 13hp to the rear wheels and is paired with a 4-speed manual transmission with reverse. Features a unique Dynastart system which incorporated a compact starter and generator into one unit.
A rare microcar with its iconic hinged center front door with connected steering wheel that leads to the single seat large enough for 2 and with a cargo area that also holds the spare tire. A left-hand drive with the gear shifter and choke controls also located on the left side for easy access. The Isetta's easy sliding windows provide some fresh air in the cabin and a knob under the seat that adjusts the heat flow. The sunroof can be retracted and provides a more spacious, convertible-like feel when out on the road!
I am the 3rd owner having purchased it from a gentleman from Oregon that owned the car for nearly 50 years. He bought the car from the original owner in Oregon who purchased the car for his wife who passed on right after the car was purchased and the husband was so broken hearted that he placed the car in a field where it sat for years. The second owner did a restoration in 1987 and I included the appraisal photos done in 2013 so you can see what I have done since purchasing this beautiful example of a Bubble car.
I purchased the car over 8 years ago and began restoring it as it was not safe to drive, with only 3 brake drums, it doesn't stop the best in a perfect world. I spent over 5 years taking the car completely apart, even bolt and nut, gasket, seal, everything was bought new and replaced. The car was stripped to bare metal and painted the original colors and paint scheme. The only thing I did different was to powder coat ever piece that you see in dark blue .................... Werner Schwark at Isettas "R" Us did not like that color as it was not the original black color. Once the chassis and body was painted, the engine and tranny gone thru, powder coated and reassembled I sent he car to Werner and he did the complete assembly.
The interior was done by a gentleman in California that only does original interiors using materials as close as possible to the original materials and colors. Everything is like new, painted, chromed or powder coated. The underside is as nice as the top. The tires on the car are correct and new, they were golf cart wheels when I got the car.
I have taken photos of the books and documentation that I have, most everything is original from 1958 and in great shape. One of the manuals is in German. The Parts book and maintenance book is original as are some of the documents. I have a collection of Bubble Car Notes and Microcar News that are from the 70', 80's, and early 2000's.
This car stops traffic, people drive by with their phones out taking videos as it is a collectors find for sure ................. I don't drive it enough and with a top speed of 48 mph, on a flat road, I only drive it my local coffee shop and to cars and coffees in the Scottsdale area. I am not getting any younger and my kids are not a car nut like me so it is time for it to find a new home for someone looking for a conversation piece.
The car is being sold as is, where is, no warrantee of any kind ................. the car starts and runs great and is like new, great for that collectors that wants something different.
Thanks for looking, best of luck bidding.
