Description:

1991 BMW 8-Series

After much soul searching I have decided to sell my dream car, the 12 cylinder BMW 850i. It was purchased at a BMW dealership who took it as a trade-in. Included with my purchase was a thick collection of service history dating back to 1992.
I have owned it since 2007. Although it was not my ideal color its condition was so good that I could not resist. It is a timeless design which will surely become a classic even though it is somewhat ignored by the hot BMW crowd - too big, too heavy and too complicated, all descriptions which could be applied to many other classics so prized today. And, it was VERY expensive. People forget that the 850 was not intended to be a light fling it through corners sportster It was designed to carry its passengers smoothly, safely and effortlessly for long distances in highest comfort. To that end it came with an ultra smooth 12 cylinder engine that is nearly indestructible as it is so under stressed at 295hp. Reports of well over 200k miles with little if any wear are not unusual. It was also a milestone vehicle in that it possessed the first multiplexed electrical system in a production vehicle - this allowed for many advanced features but also caused much grief when misunderstood. If this car was so great, you might ask, why am I selling it? Simply put, I am almost 80 now and I just don’t have the energy to rectify its problems and I need the garage space for my new car - it would be too complicated and a shame to leave this beauty outside. It has been garaged in its nice warm nest since I have owned it - no rust (except for one tiny spot on the edge of the sunroof) and beautiful shiny original paint. The black leather interior is as new except for the usual wear (color only) on the driver’s left side bolster from sliding in and out. It could be restored with color as there are no tears. The tires, Bridgestone Potenzas, are as new with not even 500 miles on them and the original alloy wheels have no curb rash. But there are some issues. Most important, the car will not start. The engine turns over freely but I have not been able to start it since last year. Before that time, it started but would stay in the 6 cylinder mode for about 20 minutes before the second bank of cylinders cut in. Very annoying which is why I had not driven it very much. I have had a specialist look at it but he could not find the problem. Now that it doesn’t start, probably due to a bad/dirty sensor in combination with old fuel, I can’t get it to the shop easily. I need the garage space and I am forced to make this decision to part ways even though it hurts every time I look at those beautiful lines. My son helped me get it out of the garage so I could take the pictures you see here.
It rained today which is the frst time it has been in the wet in the last 10 years, except for a wash. What else is wrong? It has the original radio which has the usual dim led display. The CD changer did not work and I do not know if it is the radio, changer or wiring. The electric seats work but the passenger seat is stuck in the forward position. When selecting rear movement there is a slight twist in the seat which probably will need some repaired cables/gearing. And there is a small piece of plastic broken off the center a/c vent. Yes, the A/C heating system works - at least it did when I was able to start the car. I have also had the radiator replaced by a BMW workshop when we discovered a leak.
There you have it, all I can tell you at first glance but feel free to send your questions via eBay. Although I have a LOT invested in this car I am starting the price quite low in view of the things I described. You know what these cars are worth and what the parts can bring. As I said, I no longer have the time or energy to chase after lost dollars so this is your opportunity to get an automotive masterpiece that will certainly increase in value in these years of electro-mania. This is a NO RESERVE auction so the highest bidder wins. A $500 deposit via Paypal is reqired at auction end. Remainder will be in CASH at delivery. The car has a clear title. The winner will have to have the car picked up at my home in Bergen County, New Jersey. Good Luck.
