1984 Alfa Romeo Other
1984 Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0 LiterLast year, while picking up one of our Alfa's that was serviced by Stewart at the Alfa Performance Connection in Orange, CA, I noticed this GTV6 at the shop. Stewart told me his customer had been using it as a daily driver but was moving and wanted to sell it. When he mentioned that it had a desirable 3.0 engine, I bought it. Stewart then serviced the car with fresh fluids and anything else that it needed to continue to run and drive well.
The 3.0 engine can be identified by the stamping on the engine, as the prefix of "06124" corresponds to the 3.0 engine variant. These 3.0 engines were later found in the Milano Verde and 164 sedans. A 3.0 engine transplant is a direct fit, with an immediate benefit of 189 horsepower (compared to 158 for the 2.5) for a highly spirited driving experience. Stewart told me that a 3.0 liter engine swap can cost $12,000 to $15,000. The good news for you is that this GTV6 already has it done!
Inside the car, you'll notice the tan leather upholstery on the front and back seats is in great condition. There's also another desirable upgrade, which is the Vintage Air-Conditioning system that has been installed. While the blower fans work, and I can hear the compressor turn on, the air is not cold. Needs a recharge? There was a dash cap installed when I bought the car. As I recall the odometer stopped working almost immediately after I bought it last year. All the other dash instruments and lighting function properly. The aftermarket CD/stereo works, the power side mirror works, both power windows work, the sunroof slides back and forth like it should. The interior light on the passenger side pillar is missing, and the wiring for the rear defroster isn't connected. A few plastic and interior trim pieces are damaged or show wear. New rubber weather stripping around the doors was installed by APC.
The rubber weather seal around the doors is new and still stiff so the doors don't close as easily as they should. Stewart said this is common with the new rubber and the rubber/doors will bed in within a short time. The trunk/hatchback area holds a matching spare wheel with tire, and is fitted with fresh carpeting in the cargo space. The hatch struts hold up the rear hatch and function well. An original Alfa Romeo tool kit and jack are inside the hatch area.
The engine fires up immediately and smoothly purrs at idle. Oil pressure is good, and the engine does not overheat. It willingly revs just like a 3.0 should. The engine sounds great and pulls hard, running smoothly through all RPMs. I have not noticed any oil leaks either. The 5-speed transaxle transmission in this car shifts perfectly, with no grinding in any gear. The brakes work exactly as intended and the car steers precisely. At freeway speeds it flies effortlessly and confidently straight down the road. The suspension works as it should, as the ride quality is very compliant yet sporting.
On the exterior, the car wears its original and rare color called Opale Metallic. I think the car had been repainted in its original color at some point, and then some touch up work was done last year. The paint shows some patina in places, along with a dimple under the driver's headlight that a paintless dent remover could handle. Overall, the paint is smooth and shines well, and the unique color sparkles in the sunlight.
Many GTV6's exhibit rust along the corners of the rear glass and/or windscreen, or along the jacking points. This one does not. Some of the body trim/gray plastic trim pieces/light lenses exhibit some age or are damaged.
New 15-inch 205 x 60 series tires were installed a few months ago, and the 15-inch factory alloy wheels repainted before the new tires were fitted.
I have some other Alfa projects that need my attention so this one should unfortunately leave the stable. If you'd like to see cold start and driving videos, along with more photos, please ask and I'll send you a link.
For further details on any history or servicing you may contact Stewart at APC. This desirable GTV6 with a valuable 3.0 engine transplant is ready for the road.
