1962 Willys Interlagos
Thanks for stopping by to take a look at a very cool 1962 Willys Interlagos cabriolet. This ultra rare car is not often seen in the wild and most people have never seen or heard of one. Known as a “Fly Weight” and tipping the scales at 1200 kilos, the Interlagos and following it, the Alpine A110 were track terrors. Popular among Brazilian F-1 racers, they were slower on the straights but wicked fast through the corners. Let’s check it out!
Rarity
Willys Overland, of Jeep fame, licensed the design of the A-108 from Alpine and produced the car in Sao Paulo Brazil near the famed Interlagos F-1 racetrack. Alpine drivetrains were Renault. The Interlagos uses a tuned version of the Gordini engine.
The Interlagos was produced only to order and not displayed in Willys dealer showrooms. The 3 year production run saw just 822 cars produced, 74 of which were convertibles. This is number 10 and likely the first convertible. No cars were destined for America. This car was collector owned and stored away for many years. The cars were built to race and subsequently, most were destroyed. Of those that survived, many were refitted with Volkswagen power as an inexpensive alternative to the Gordini engine.
Exterior.
With a body design by carrozzeria Michelotti. She looks like the car that the Girl from Ipanema would drive to that famous Brasil beach.
Finished in Glossy two stage OEM Metallic green. Excellent paint quality. Stacked clear has been hand color sanded to 5000 grit and then polished and ceramic coated. Her tight lines really shine from every angle.
Excellent body fit and finish is laser straight
Fresh brightwork
Correct amber headlamps
Correct spatter finish has been applied to the underbody, engine compartment and front trunk.
New convertible top.
This early production car did not have the perspex headlight covers.
Wheels, Tires
Steel 15 inch 3 lug wheels capped by logo spinners. New Toyo tires.
Engine
845 cc Gordini tuned 4 cylinder
Engine freshened throughout and runs excellent
Radiator and fuel tank cleaned and serviced
All new hoses, rubbers, water pump
Fresh tune, oil change.
The 6 volt system is retained. A new battery is installed.
New fuse block. Non OEM with actual fuses.
Transmission
4 speed full synchromesh transmission
4 wheel drum brakes serviced. New hoses and master cylinder.
OEM Monroe shock absorbers are still in place and have been cleaned and serviced.
Interior
Licensed Nardi Wood Steering wheel
New carpeting
New upholstery
Original supple leather seats are soft and comfortable
No radio or heater. (Brasil, racing)
Rust concerns - None. This is a solid, dry car.
Spares. Vehicle comes with a spare windshield, lights, metal trim, lettering etc.
The RIO license plate does not go with the car.
DMV
The California title is clean. California license plate.
