I am helping a friend sell this flawless Willys Jeepster. Just as a matter of reference, I have been judging cars at all types of show levels for over 25 years and have extensive experience in restoration of many marques. I am extremely picky and probably grade more on the lower side when evaluating vehicles. I would consider a 10 on my scale to be a Concour Quality vehicle, just so you have a reference. This example is collector quality and is a solid #1 Condition vehicle from my perspective. My friend is probably one of the most fastidious collectors I have ever known in my life. Period. To say he is A/R is an understatement.
This is an extraordinary example of what might be considered one of the nicest Jeepster's I have ever seen. This example was completely restored between 1998 and 2000 and has less than 5000 miles its completion. Some upgrades were done in the last few years, detailed below.
This car has spent its entire life in Southern CO and Southern CA according to the two previous owners and extensive records that come with the car. This is a rust free example that I would jump in and drive to NY City tomorrow.
There are extensive records that come with the car that substantiate the restoration in its entirety.
BODY & PAINT
The body and paint on this vehicle is simply the finest you will find on a 65 year old car. The body is perfectly straight and appears to have never been damaged in it’s history. All metal appears to be original to the car. Take a look at the close-ups of the shut lines and you will see just what I am referring to. We do not know what the original color was as the vehicle was media blasted before it was repainted. There are zero signs of any other color on this car. This was a windows out restoration that was performed by a high-end restoration shop. It is clear that the body was blocked multiple times and the panels are completely flat and wave free.
Glass is all factory original and free of cracks or pits. The side curtains are brand new and has
I could not find one chip, scratch, abrasion or even a hairline of imperfection in the paint. Red is a tough color for most to keep up, but my friend is a detail FREAK and the car has spent every day of its life in the garage since restoration. His paint correction and maintenance to the surface is beyond any owner that I know. My detailer is the best I have ever seen, but his cars always look as though they were just done by my guy. You simply cannot find a more perfect paint specimen to buy. You would be proud to show this car at any Car Show.
The video unfortunately was shot during heavy sunlight and gives the color a pinkish hue, which is NOT the color of the car. This is Porsche Guards Red color and is a hue of RED - RED. I tried to take pictures in shade and it sunlight conditions to show the true color of the car. It is a very deep and smooth paint application, two stage PPG Paint.
I would rate the body & paint at a solid 9.6 overall.
Hubcaps are all brand new.
CHROME
The chrome plating on the car is all first rate and I would call it all #1 condition. It is mostly all new chrome within the last four years that my friend has owned. The stainless trim pieces are all new. The drivers side rear view mirror is not replated and is very original and while not perfect has a great look to it. Bumpers and all interior pieces are chrome plated.
Chrome is a 9.8
INTERIOR
The Interior is very nice condition and is mostly all new. The front seats were from a later model Cadillac and look and feel as if they came with the car. The front seat is power operated. The seat and door upholstery is a very high-quality leatherette style vinyl. I had to smell it to make sure of what I was looking at and is also backed up in the receipts. The gauges all look like they are brand new. I don’t know if they were restored at some point or if they are completely original. I would rate the interior at a 9.8 overall. The interior literally looks BRAND NEW.
UNDERCARRIAGE
The Undercarriage is very nice condition, with no signs of rust or rust repair. It is clean and tidy, however reflects it has been driven since restoration.
MECHANICAL
This Little Red Rocket rolls with authority, thanks to the tasteful mods that were added to the car. The meager original engine was replaced with a crate Ford 302 motor durning the restoration timeframe of 1998-2000 and has less than 5000 miles on it. This example runs, handles and brakes flawlessly in every category. The car has always been serviced by high-end shops. Tires have nearly all their tread still left on them.
The car features power steering and power brakes, discs were applied to the front wheels for additional stopping power. The car runs cool thanks to a new 4 core aluminum radiator and pusher fan. All hoses, nuts & bolts under the hood were replaced and add nicely to the high-quality look under the hood. Take a look at all the little details in the motor compartment pictures.
The modern Mustang II front-end with rack and pinion steering is just an amazing addition to one of these old Jeepster’s. It no longer feels like you are driving an old truck. This really changes the dynamic ride on this vintage vehicle. Combined with the modern 302, power steering and power disc brakes and Cadillac seats, this Jeepster is completely transformed into the driving feel of a modern automobile.
The entire wiring harness was replaced with a brand new “Painless” Wiring Harness Kit, with installation over $5000 was spent. This was all done in the last four years. Again, take a look under the hood, it looks like the wiring on an F18 Fighter Jet. At the time of installation the car was converted from it’s original 6-Volt to a 12-Volt system. There is a 12-Volt Heater behind the front seats that works nicely with the top down on a cool day.
The original radio was replaced with an Alpine AM/FM CD Bluetooth enabled system with four large quality speakers installed tastefully throughout the cabin. The sound quality is rich and powerful, even with the top in the down position.
Today, this Jeepster is presented in true #1 condition, probably one of the nicest restomods I have ever seen. Over $40K was invested in this Jeepster. Bear that in mind when you are comparing to other Jeepsters on the market. Very few have modernized like this one, so it is hard to compare prices to a stock set-up. These were extensive and expensive upgrades that took a lot of fabrication and professional level skills to complete. Nothing was done by a home garage guy. This is a pro-level build where nothing was sparred to not only make it beautiful, but transform it into modern car practicality. This would be a car that someone could use as a daily driver. The C-4 transmission and modern V8 combine to give it decent mpg, between 15-22 mpg.
The car comes with the original factory owners manual. The top and canvas pieces are all new and in terrific shape. The car is exceptionally well-sorted mechanically. It starts up immediately, idles wonderfully; drives straight down the road and brakes with absolute authority. It has been recently serviced and needs nothing for its new owner to do. You can sit all day long with this car in traffic and never experience an overheating problem.
If you are looking for a near concour example of an early Jeepster, sorted mechanically and show worthy inside and out, then this may just be the car for you. This is a car that needs to be seen and driven to fully appreciate this high quality professional restoration.
Please call if you are local and want to see and experience this fine specimen. We welcome inspection from reputable and knowledgeable inspectors or experts.
