Description:

1979 Volvo 242

Rare vintage Volvo 242 for sale by a long time Volvo collector. Many classic Volvo 240 series fans believe this flat hood, single round headlight version is the best looking of all 240 iterations. This car is stored in a dry garage along with six other classic Volvo's in my collection.
The color is called "Lexington green" (paint code: 140) and is a super rare one year only color. It has an excellent older respray of the original paint with some typical nicks, paint blemishes and areas of touch up but, as the photos show... it's is in overall excellent condition. No rust issues.
The odometer shows 132k miles but the odometer is not working and the speedometer bounces around a bit. This is a common issue with these 240 series cars. My Volvo mechanic determined that the odometer issue is in the cluster while the speedo issue is definitely the cable. The clear Virginia title shows mileage as "exempt". All other gauges work- even the clock.
Glass all around is excellent and windows roll up and down as they should. The original windshield rubber trim had some overspray and was brittle so I obtained new rubber trim. The original chrome and new rubber trim is all there but it still needs to be attached better than my limited skills allowed (I have the new clips). There are new window scrapers on both front windows. The two rear side windows push out.
Suspension upgrades:new Bilstein B4 shocks at all four wheelsB&G lowering springs
The car rides on refinished stock Volvo period correct 14 inch steel wheels with chrome trim rings and very rare clip on center caps. The tires were mounted new in March 2023 and have less than 500 miles on them.
New brake rotors and pads all around
Clutch is all new/rebuilt in the last 500 milesnew fuel tanknew Interstate battery with battery saver cutoffcomplete Kjet tune up included new plugs, hoses, filters, seals and gaskets where replacement was needed.new radiator hoses, overflow reservoir and coolant flushnew steering racktiming belt service completed March 2023
I have about $8,000 in parts and service receipts (all completed in the last 500 miles) and this does NOT include the paint work or the new custom Corbeau front seats ($1,500/pair).
The interior is excellent. The back seat has the original black cloth. The front seats are very comfortable new charcoal color Corbeau sport seats on new adjustable mounting brackets. A new black carpet kit was installed when the front seats were replaced. There's a new aftermarket in dash Kenwood stereo with new speakers in the rear deck lid and both front door panels. The dash has a new plastic dash cap that fits snugly. The trunk is exceptionally clean with new carpet and a new spare tire. Zero rust- see photos.
No a/c (and this car did not come from the factory with a/c)heat not functioning but it may be a loose manual slide switch... fan does blow on all speeds. No leaks
The car starts right up and runs great after warming up for a minute. There is no overdrive so the 4-speed manual is great around town but potential buyers wanting to do extended 70+ mph highway driving may want to investigate adding OD. The driving experience (with the lowering springs and new shocks) is tight and firm in the turns- a really fun driving experience that I'd compare to the BMW 2002.
