Description:
1976 Volvo 240
- 1976 Volvo 245 DL wagon. B21 engine, M46 5 speed transmission, A/C car.Very nice vintage iconic wagon that was driven and taken care of as well during its ownership. By looking over the car I believe it was inside for most if not all of its life.
- PAINT- I believe to be original, I cant find any over spray or signs of a respray. On door handle, weatherstripping, trim pieces etc. Paint does have some chips in it, slight scratches, and some small dings or dents, typical of a car of this age but is remarkably good being driven 231,551 miles. Previous owner did fill some rock chips when you look over the car. Small dent on the drivers rear lower fender lip with two slight creases there about the size of your palm. Two slight depressions on the drivers front fender on top by gap by door and just below front edge of trim at front end. I did wax the paint on this and its in very good condition. Not burned through or thin in places which is common but not on this car. Some rust blisters are starting to form along the side windows weatherstripping. Two small spots on left side and two on the right side. This is a common issue on these older wagons. Looks like at one point that they tried to seal up the weatherstripping to avoid this. Size of blister is about the size of a pencil eraser.
- BODY- All glass is good, windshield has a small marble chip at the top part not in view of the driver. Otherwise crack free. Windows roll up and down freely. Door handles open freely work correctly. Hoop pop opens nice as it should. Rear hatch doesn't rattle, closes nice and solid. Doors close solid no latch play. No rust underneath car or the floors or by windshield trim. Some along rear side windows explained above. I don't believe car was ever in an accident as far as I can tell. Grille area up front looks solid, no cracks in grill or headlight bezels. Signal lenses have some slight dry cracking on them and the taillight light lenses but still in good shape. Some scratches on the front top side of front bumper on the pass side. Some gouges on the rubber stripping also in that area, pass front. Otherwise the rubber bumper trim is in nice shape.
- INTERIOR- Brown vinyl interior in good shape. Dash has the typical crack on the transition section where it bumps up. Glove box opens and closes with key and locks. Odometer works as does the speedometer. Gas gauge and temp gauge works good as well. Dash lights however do not work. A/C works, clutch does engage but doesn't blow cold. Blower fan is quiet. The temp control knob is stuck and I don't want to force it, could be the heater control valve. Overdrive light on dash is inop as written by original owner in his maintenance notes. Overdrive does work. Carpet is original and in good shape. Has the waffle Volvo floor mats. Door panels are in very good shape, no wilting or signs of water damage. Seats are worn up front but aged well. Seams are just starting to separate but vinyl is in good shape. Looks to be original material or a nice recover job was done. Rear seat is original and has brown tape on passenger side and starting to dry out on the drivers side. Rear cargo area uses and worn but nice shape. Head liner is clean not ripped. Rear panel is on the rear hatch. No evidence of rust on the inside rear side windows along the weatherstrip which is a common spot on these older wagons.
- DRIVE TRAIN- Engine is the B21 non egr, with the air pump. Passed California smog no problems in February this year. Runs well idle seems to be a little low at cold starts but is ok as it is. No weird noises or abnormal sounds from this engine. Some slight oil leaks under engine or by valve cover, not major but there. The power steering takes a min or two to start pressurizing. Raising the idle a little seems to help with this but was noted in the previous owners maintenance notes as well. Once its working it works the rest of the time your driving the car until you shut it off. The steering rack does have some small seeps on it. Radiator looks to be fairly new or replaces in the last few years, it is the good metal tank style not plastic. Transmission shifts good, clutch grabs as it should no shuddering. Some slight seeps or oil drops on bottom of transmission also. All gears work and feels nice. Exhaust is good but has a small leak at the rear muffler. Cant hear it at speed but only when your standing at the back of the car. Does have a trailer hitch on it also. Wheels are in good shape, looks to be original silver paint with the Volvo center cap. 205 70 R14 tires.
- SUSPENSION- Car feels floaty when driving so could use new shocks and struts to help the ride feel more firmer. Sway bars would help also but depends if you are a purist on these or not.
- BRAKES- Driving the car feels solid but when coming to a stop the pedal gradually goes down toward the floor. Probably could use a master cylinder. Stops well on the initial pedal application just goes down while you hold it. Not completely to the floor but goes down more than normal. There are some stains on the booster below where the master cylinder mounts to the booster.
- Think I covered everything about the car in detail and up front about what it needs or condition. The car does need some mechanical things but those can be done with no issues. This car has the major things that are hard or costly to get redone. Paint and Interior. These are in very good to excellent condition. The rest you can replace or repair. I don't have a place to keep the car inside and feel it should be indoors with a collector. Otherwise I would keep it and take it to shows.
- One owner vehicle until 2019 when the original owner decided to turn it in for a new car. A good soul, 2nd owner technically had it for less than a year. He saved the car at least from being turned in. I ended up with it after seeing it in the area for the last 8 years. Name on the owners manual from the dealer matches the old vehicle registration. Still wears the Blue and Yellow California plates. Title is clear and registration is current. Buyer is responsible for smog if in the state of California, not needed if you live outside of California. It did pass the last test in February with no issues and was below its number limits. If you have any other questions about the car feel free to ask.
- SHIPPING- Buyer is responsible for arranging shipping. I can meet the shipper if needed nearby in a parking lot etc. I will only store the vehicle up to 30 days if needed. Vehicle is sold as is where is. Cash in person if locallyBank wire transfer within 7 days after auction end Or cashiers check.
