1989 Volvo 240 DL Wagon 5 Speed Manual - Very Clean
1989 Volvo 240 DL
I have over 100 recent photos of the car. eBay will only allow 24. Message me if there's something else you'd like to see.
I have driven this car pretty much every day since I got it running in November 2018. It's been exceptionally reliable and a joy to drive. It cruises around town and on the highway with ease. There are no air leaks in the cabin at freeway speeds. The car will come with two sets of wheels and tires. One is the original steel set with all four hubcaps. They include Hankook Winter Pike snow tires with lots of tread remaining. The other is a set of 240 Turbo wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Advantage T/A rubber (less than 1,000 miles).
The engine runs strong and starts easily. There is a small oil leak at the rear of the block but it has never caused the dipstick to drop, only the occasional drop on the ground. I've not seen a puff of smoke, and it doesn't appear to burn any oil. I cleaned the flame trap and you can see there is no oil being forced out of the filler cap. I acquired the car non-running and it turned out to be a failed ignition ECU. It now has an ECU, Bosch coil, and ignitor from a '91 240. Timing belt mileage is unknown, but since this a non-interference engine, I never stressed it. The belt appears to be in good shape. The air filter, oil, plugs, wires, cap/rotor and belts have been recently changed. Spark plugs are NGK, plug wires are Bougicord, cap and rotor are Bosch. There is a cold-weather coolant recirculation pump in the lower radiator hose. The cord is hidden behind the front grill.
The transmission shifts well, cold and hot. The clutch mileage is unknown to me but grabs strong. The oil was recently changed with the correct Type-F transmission fluid. There is a very slight leak from the transmission output shaft, only enough to leave a drop.
The suspension appears to be original with the exception of the front control arm bushings. I changed those after one driver-side failed. I had an alignment done at the local Volvo dealer. The car drives well without any clunks, odd noises, or movements when hitting road imperfections. In my opinion, it drives well by any car standards, let alone one that was designed in the 1970's.
The entire exhaust from the manifold back has been replaced. The catalytic converter is a bolt-in Walker unit. The rest of the exhaust is an OE Starla kit with new rubber hangers. The car passed an emission test without issue.
All of the lighting works with the exception of one cluster bulb. The underhood, dome, center console, and cargo lights have been replaced with LED's. The taillight covers were sprayed with red tail light tint as they faded from sun exposure.
The interior is original with the exception of the front seats and the radio. I believe the seats were replaced due to the car coming from Florida and the originals being vinyl. The seats are blue cloth from another 240. There is a matching blue dash pad. The dash is cracked as shown in photos. The radio and speakers are newer Alpine units. The other remaining interior damage is shown in photos as well. I recently replaced the blower motor. The A/C was professionally converted at some point to R134a. The A/C works but the heater valve sometimes has a mind of its own. I replaced it while the dash was out but the new valve leaked out of the box, so the old one is back in. The heater, like all 240's seems to harness the energy of a Supernova. Keyless entry has been added but the original door-operated central locking functions as intended.
There is surface rust noted in the photos. By 240 standards, outside of Southern California cars, it is very minimal. The worst is photographed and underneath the rear bumper cover. There is some damage on the pinch welds and floor area that appears as it came from a misplaced lift at some point. The original black vinyl stripe down the side of the car has dried and cracked.
