Description:

1987 Volvo 240

Hello eBay,

Up for sale is my 1987 245DL. I’m not in a position where I’m being forced to sell it, owever I recently purchased another car due to a lengthy commute and the wagon has been relegated to the driveway and occasional weekend warrior duty (trips to home depot, owes, tc.). It’s been a phenomenal car and I am, uite honestly, till on the fence about letting it go since I think it is such a versatile workhorse, owever I figured that rather than let it sit I would post it up here and see if someone would come along and give it a good home.

Basics:

1987 Volvo 245DL

M47 5-speed manual, ight Blue Metallic on Dark Blue vinyl.

Hand crank windows, entral locking/unlocking from the drivers door

Vin: YV1AX8856H1749075

Mileage:estimated: 117k, hows: 107,472 due to a failed odometer gear pod (common issue) that has since been repaired.

Mechanically it’s in great shape and has never let me down. Plenty of maintenance and repairs completed with documentation available. Cosmetically it’s seen better days, owever this is the one area that I really don’t concern myself with too much. I took quite a few photos but I would really prefer for anybody who is interested to come see it in person. If there is anything specific you’d like a photo of just let me know. I’ve tried my best to take care of it and want to see it go on to a good home. I can assist with facilitating shipping, f necessary, r I can pick a potential buyer up from either Miami International Airport or Fort Lauderdale Airport. As it sits right now I would not hesitate to drive it across the country (with my Bentley manual and toolbag, f course).

History

I purchased this car from a family member about 1.5 years ago. He purchased it from a gentleman about 2 hours north of us who brought it to Florida—where it sat until we purchased it—from California after he inherited it from his aunt and uncle. So, am technically the fourth owner going by registration records, owever this is only the second family it’s been in. I also believe it was dealer serviced by the original owner for the entire time they had it.

When my family member purchased it the odometer wasn’t working (gear pod and 25T gear crumbled apart) and it was not replaced until recently. In the interest of accuracy I did some calculations of his previous commute and mine for the time that we owned it and I estimate it has gone about 10k miles without a working odo (+/- 500), ringing the total to around 117k.

The AutoCheck shows a “minor accident” listed in June, 008 in Suisun City, A, owever I’ve never seen documentation of it in the records I have nor do I recall my family member ever mentioning it. I don’t think the original owners' nephew was aware of it, nd I’ve tried to get ahold of the accident report (Suisun City PD has an online record retrieval option through LexisNexis), owever you need a report number and driver name which are two things I don’t have. I’ve never seen any obvious repairs, r anything out of the ordinary, eally, o I pretty much dropped it. My guess is that it had to have been very, ery minor, ut I want to give full-disclosure here.

The good:

·It drives great. Feels solid, hifts smooth, racks straight. Occasionally difficult to get it into reverse, ut I understand that is common with M47's.

·Rear seat doesn’t look like it was ever used by the original owners and I almost always kept it folded down, o it looks damn new.

·Working odometer (finally!).

·The instrument cluster clock was replaced with a tach (why they wouldn’t have included a tach on the manual cars is beyond me).

·Tires were replaced with Yokohama’s in September. 185/70/14 Avid Touring S (620 treadwear, 5k factory warranty, traction, temp). Purchased from Discount Tire and all 4 have the replacement certificates.

·IPD Sport lowering springs and Bilstein Touring 200 shocks put on right before the yokohama’s went on, lignment performed immediately after.

·Long list of repair and maintenance items performed, o unless something significant or out of the ordinary pops up I expect it should provide many miles of mellow cruising.

·Temp-faker mod (http://cleanflametrap.com/tempFaker.html) completed.

·It has what appears to be some sort of factory, r possibly dealer, nstalled alarm/ anti-theft device….which, guess, s good, ut for the love of all that is holy I absolutely hate it. It’s loud and goes off if you don’t follow very specific rules/timeframes. And it’s loud. Very loud. And chances are nobody is going to steal your brick...but alas, t's there.

·JVC head unit with Alpine Type-S speakers in the front. USB connection with iPod 30 pin cable included, ux adapter w/ aux cable included, nd a mic for Bluetooth hands-free capability which I’ve never hooked up (not sure if you need the expansion module or if this head unit has it built-in). The head unit is mounted in the lower slot right in front of the shifter.

·Has some sweet original Volvo floor mats. I don’t know much about them, ut they look like a factory version of weathertechs and match the interior color. I really like these.

·Tinted windows (20% all around), lthough there are some imperfections on the interior cargo area due to being scraped by something I was carrying/loading.

·Maintenance done in past 5k:

oCooling system flush, dded Zerex dex-cool (silicate & phosphate free)

oThermostat replaced (180 degree)

oOil/filter change: Chevron Delo-400, 5W-40.

oOriginal fan clutch replaced with a Tropical fan clutch (meant to do an e-fan but it got too complicated)

oFuel lines replaced

oFlame-trap replaced

The bad (or at least noteworthy)

·A/C has not worked the entire time it has been in our family. It made for some tough days in the Florida heat, owever I never really convinced myself it was so absolutely necessary that I had to go get it fixed. At some point the original owner had it converted to R-134, nd I did try to have it re-charged twice but it didn’t do much. Heat works fantastic, hough.

·On a rare occasion the temp will start creeping up. This only happens on very hot days (we have a lot of those down here…I’m referring to 92+ with high humidity) and when you’re idling for an extended period of time such as at a drive-thru or in heavy stop/go traffic for an extended period of time. It will usually get to about 5/8 and then get back down once you’re back to regular driving. The tropical fan clutch has mostly alleviated this.

·Windshield has one chip which I think has been there since the original owners had it, o it’s never been a problem.

·Dashboard is cracked from sun damage.

· Interior plastic is brittle and has also cracked or chipped off (e.g. door card pockets, lastic trim at top anchor point of driver’s seatbelt.). You’ll see in some of the pictures where I showed the crack but then popped the plastic back into place and it’s not noticeable.

·Rear, assenger side taillight. The reverse light plastic fell off and only a portion of it was salvageable. I glued that piece back on, ut new tail lenses were on my to-do list.

·Drivers seat bolster (left side) is showing a little wear. Passenger seat has a small (.5”) crack in the vinyl.

·Driver side speaker grill mounting tabs broke off, ever got around to fixing or replacing. I still have the grill.

·Front driver side fender has some surface rust, itting and chipping. The rest of the paint is hit or miss; some looks great and will still shine, ut quite a few other areas have deep and/or extensive scratches/scrapes/dings. It’s never really bothered me since I like the look…gives it character and I never have to concern myself with where I park; people usually look at the car, ssume it doesn’t have insurance, nd park far away from it. Win/win.

·Some of the adhesive on the badging is starting to come off.

·Plastic trim pieces are faded

·Some trim pieces have come off (one was repaired with some trusty duct tape, ne other is sitting in the garage)

·Headlights are original and very cloudy/yellowed. Euro e-code’s were on my "want" list, gain, ever got around to it.

·One fog light doesn’t work. I’ve replaced the wiring, hecked fuses, witched bulbs…nada. Still out. No clue why. However they do come with original covers.

· · Headliner is scuffed in the cargo area, river/passenger area have a couple of marks, nd the entrance to the cargo are has some tearing right at the top.

·Passenger side key slot does not work. Someone tried to break in with a screwdriver and damaged it beyond repair. Never got around to replacing it.

·Windshield washer nozzles were replaced with some dual nozzles from IPD. Within a week of installing them only one nozzle on each is functional, nd it’s the one that sprays to the outside so the wipers get very little fluid. I’ve tried clearing it up with a needle but it always clogs again. Have not gotten around to replacing them, ut this is quick/cheap.

The spares and stuff from my “To-Do” list that comes with it

·I managed to snag a blue-vinyl OEM armrest off ebay, owever it’s cracked and needs to be recovered.

·4-note horn from the Cadillac Fleetwood/Seville/El Dorado. Wanted to replace the dingy OEM tone, ever got around to it.

·Door lock actuator (brought a spare also) with wire for driver side. Was going to install one of the <$20 keyless entry systems and this is needed to make the drive side work. Never ordered the actual keyless entry system, ut I’ve seen some recently for as little as $14 shipped.
