Description:

1993 Volvo 240 Classic

1993 Volvo 240 Wagon
I have owned this car for the last 4 years and put on about 30k miles. It came up from North Carolina via an auto auction, and I was initially attracted because it was rust free. (Plus, I already knew Volvo 240s and have been a fan.)
The car is a Classic, and the tag on the dash says Number 966 of 1600 -- meaning that it is number 966 of the last run of 1600 240s made for the American market. It has AC, power windows and locks, padded steering wheel, heated seats, heated outside mirrors, and updated Pioneer digital stereo radio with CD and mp3 player input.
I have kept up on the maintenance, and I can share the repair records. Below are the items I have replaced:
  • Windshield replaced (since the original was very scratched).
  • Front Stabilizers, outer tie rod ends, lower ball joints
  • Crank pulley, crank gear, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, and all accessory belts in 2013
  • Coolant temp sensor
  • Alternator
  • Exhaust system
  • Brakes
  • Electonic spark Igniter and main relay
  • Shift linkage bushings
  • Water pump and radiator hoses
  • Distributor cap, rotor and wires
  • Fuel pump relay
  • Rear hatch support struts

The most obvious issues with the car:
  • It is missing 2 pieces of trim above the bumpers -- front right corner and back rear corner -- as shown in the pictures. These can be found on ebay.
  • The hard plastic inside the passenger compartment has gotten very brittle, likely from the North Carolina sun. Some pieces are broken, as shown in the photo of the inside of the front passenger door.
  • The paint is still shiny, but up close you can see the nicks. However, none are through to bare metal. The only really noticeable bad spot of the driver's side outside mirror, but here again not to bare metal and so no rust.
  • Some of the indicator bulbs on the switches are out and I have not replaced those.
  • There is a short in the instrument pod, which makes the temp gauge stop reading at times. A fist bang on the dashboard is usually enough to get it reading again.
  • The seats are pretty worn, which is why the cheap vinyl covers are on, but no tears yet (last time I looked under the covers).
  • The back carpet in the cargo area is very worn, but I have a piece of carpet on top that matches pretty well.
  • The wire on the rear wiper that lets it return to the parked position must be broken. The wiper works as does the washer that I rebuilt, but when you shut off the rear wiper, it stops at that position rather than parking at the bottom of its sweep.
  • I do not have hub caps for it.
None of these issues affect performance. I know of no mechanical issues at this time, and I used the car just yesterday. During my ownership, I used it mostly for local trips up to about 100 miles, but it did go up to Ithaca and out to Eastern Long Island a couple of times with no issues.
The car has on a set of snow tires that have about 5000 to 7000 miles left on them. I have a set of unmounted non-snows that can go with the car, and they likely have 5000 to 10,000 miles on them.
I have a roof rack and the mounting hardware that I never put on. (The car's roof was never drilled, but it is an easy job.) I also have a few other parts. I would be willing to sell these to the winning bidder at nice prices, but they are not part of the auction.
PLEASE NOTE: This car is relisted. The only change in the listing is regarding the title. My New York State title does NOT say salvage, but the VIN report showed that, prior to my ownership, it had a salvage title in North Carolina. Ebay cancelled my original listing pending this correction. Please feel free to look at the vehicle history based on the VIN. My best guess is that any damage in 2013 before I owned it was minor, since neither my mechanic nor I have seen anydamage issues nor body filler, etc., but the insurance company called it a salvage based on age and miles at the time. My intent here is to disclose all facts as best as I know them.
