Vehicle Details
FOR SALE: 1972 VW Karmann Ghia Coupe(Located in Hamlet Indiana (north/central Indiana) zip 46562, ¼ mile South of US Rte 30 at a friend’s body shop where it can be easily viewed)Started this project in 2018 with a rust-free Karmann Ghia purchased from South Carolina. It had been lowered dramatically including a shock tower ‘chop’ (eliminating the shock absorbers?!)So… I replaced the entire front beam with a new aluminum beam. New front brakes are Wilwood. New brake lines. New Koni ‘Red’ shocks. New wheel bearings.BODY:(One of the coolest body designs of ANY car, period. IMO) The South Carolina body was in decent shape (has some filler) and the floor pans had been replaced – but that’s what I wanted: Something I wasn’t afraid to drive. (I’ve built several high-end ‘paint/body’ cars over the years and because they’re ‘too nice’ — I rarely drive them.) This Karmann Ghia is VERY presentable – but NOT a show car. Again, that was the idea; to have the body look presentable but not worry about chipping paint. The body was originally yellow and has been repainted painted a few times over the past 50 years. I had it painted in satin black a year and a half ago. Not show paint. ‘Outlaw’ paint. It has an ‘outlaw’ style rear trunk lid spoiler, as well as a front air dam that both add to the ‘outlaw’ / racer look. The front and back glass (and gaskets) were NEW (last year). The red interior is nice w/ aftermarket buckets, fresh carpet and door panels – but still has a few (intentionally left alone) rough edges and patina. Back-dated (60’s) ‘blade-style’ bumpers, front and rear are newENGINE: The engine was built up from a spare 2.0L/ 042 case that I bought 10+ years ago ¬ ¬— from a retiring VW Formula ‘Super Vee’ / Formula Vee’ racing series builder near Detroit. (These VW open wheel racing series’ depend on meticulous machine work and assembly to gain competitive advantage – because aftermarket parts and mods are extremely limited.)It runs an FK 41 cam, with long-ram intake manifolds with Webbers ( 38’s I believe, fresh big valve heads, full-flow oiling, with remote filter and engine lid-mounted cooler, stainless steel doghouse, upgraded distributor, ceramic coated header, etc, etc. ( all the bells and whistles!)Never dyno’d but would guestimate 130-140hp.IRS TRANSAXLE:Is a new BENCO ‘Pro Street Freeway Flyer’ IRS transaxle w/ 3.88x.89 gearing. Again: NEW.SUSPENSION / BRAKES / WHEELS / TIRES:Front suspension / beam is NEW. Brakes are all NEW. Koni ‘RED’ shocks all around. New EMPI (oversize) sway bars front and rear.Wheels are EMPI 5-bolt fake FUCHS w/ KHUMO ECSTA 195f & 205r/50 tires. (w
