1970s styled Baja bug / street bug in running condition. Has plenty of attitude
1964 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic
McQueen’s moldy pickle.
Was this 1964 VW parked inside a San Francisco Bay area garage in 1971, to just recently be discovered? Still untouched.
Is this the long-lost Baja bug that Steve McQueen was supposed to drive in the sequel to the iconic 1968 movie, Bullitt?A movie project named, “Who Brought the Killer Bugs to the Bay?”, was supposed to capture the era of wild freedom, distorted rock and roll, and the current Baja bug frenzy that then swept California.
A movie where McQueen once again would play the part of Frank Bullitt, as an undercover cop infiltrating the dangerous underground Baja bug world. So, did Steve McQueen himself build a Baja bug out of that dark green VW beetle he drove by in the movie Bullitt, (four times in four different locations)?
Does this Baja / Street bug have the wheels from his 1968 Mustang?
All the above is just fiction. It was an idea running wild with my imagination, so therefore, I had to build what I think Steve McQueen / Frank Bullitt would have liked to drive on and off the streets of San Francisco in the early 1970s.
A car built to go where Mustangs can’t go. A street bug with attitude, and some power.
I based it on a rust-free and running 1964 VW.It was already built as a Baja bug, more so for the desert and I wanted it more of a street bug style so I gave it a makeover with a faked patina.
It has a healthy 1776cc engine, has a 69 mm crank, and stock rods. 90.5 mm pistons.
The dual port heads have big valves. Dual 40 EMPI carbs (with Weber acc. Pump covers) Pertronix ignition and a new 1700 Kennedy clutch. New transmission mounts and transmission strap.
I put a new exhaust on it, and new aluminum valve covers. (The old exhaust and old valve covers are included in the purchase)The suspension is completely stock. It has new brakes all around.
I installed the vintage 4 ¾” bolt pattern (1968) American Racing TTII wheels. 15x10” polished in the rear, and 15x7” front on adapters.
All four tires are also vintage, they have good thread but are dry and I would recommend replacing them with modern tires.
I repainted the whole car in Hunter Green, and added some metallic and clear coat, before scuffing it down to give it the desired patina I was after.
Please note, that there is no real finish to the car, it is supposed to look old, and it does feel old. I even gave the reproduction stickers some patina to blend in.
The interior is in a usable condition.
New door panels all around, stock seats.
The lights and blinkers work, as do the wipers, speedo, and gas gauge.
Included in the deal is another set of wheels. Stock front steel wheels and good tires, and Jackman styles 15x10” with bad tires.
Also included are the engine cage and the front bumper.
Do you want to have fun, do you want attention, do you want action? This is it – Have fun, be happy.
The car is currently registered in California and titled in my name.
Please note that I reserve the right to end the auction early as the bug is also for sale locally.
I am glad to work with out-of-state or out-of-the-country buyers and can arrange for transportation if needed.
Feel free to call me for more information, pictures, and videos.
