1982 Volkswagen Vanagon L Station Wagon/Bus - excellent condition
1982 was the third year for the Vanagon Model in the United States
Building on the legacy of its own Type 2 (T1) and T2 microbus models, Volkswagen went out on a limb with the T3 platform that was launched in North America as the Vanagon. It was a little larger and more contemporary looking, but the shockwave came from a new water-cooled engine in place of the previous air-cooled engine. This example—a 1982 Volkswagen Vanagon—is in “excellent” condition, and it “runs and drives like brand new.” The 103,000 miles on the odometer are said to be original, and so is the two-tone paint scheme.
POWERTRAIN
A fuel-injected 2.0-liter OHC inline-four powered these early Vanagon models and that’s what’s driving this example. it is the original engine and it has not been rebuilt. It starts right up, with no reported smoke or leaks. The engine mounts were recently replaced. The clutch is brand new, and it helps the four-speed manual gearbox shift great.
The paintwork on this Vanagon is original and in good condition for its age. There are no swirl marks in the finish, but there are “minor scratches” here and there, and there has been no rust repairs performed on the body. All the glass is “clean,” with no scratches or cracks, and there are no reported issues or leaks with the door, window, and cargo hatch seals. The grille was recently replaced, and the exterior lighting is said to be functional. It also has a sunroof that reportedly opens and closes normally.
A brown vinyl-trimmed cabin complements the exterior and is in good original condition. The condition of the seat covers and carpet is good, while the headliner garners an “excellent” rating. Notably, all the original seats are in place and the cabin has not been modified. All the gauges reportedly work normally, too. The only apparent non-standard item in the cabin is a more contemporary radio (with a detachable faceplate).
The chassis, suspension and brake components are maintained to stock specifications and there is no known rust in the chassis. The Vanagon drives well, with no vibrations, and good braking performance. It runs and drives like brand new. The age of the tires is unknown, but are in very good condition and appear to show most of their tread. They’re mounted on stock steel wheels, adorned with lace-style wheel covers.
This vehicle will be sold on a clean Massachusetts title. A cult quickly formed around these vans, and it remains strong more than 40 years after their introduction. This 1982 Volkswagen Vanagon appears to be a comparatively rare example that has survived the past four decades with no modifications, its original paintwork, and its original powertrain. It’s in excellent condition.
