1992 Volkswagen EuroVan CV CAMPER

Vehicle Details

Many people searching for a VW Eurovan Camper are familiar with the white long-wheelbase version converted by Winnebago for the U.S. market, but our neighbors to the north in Canada got the true ‘Westy’ version in the short-wheelbase Eurovan starting in 1992. Westfalia of Germany is the famous camper conversion company that established the VW camper legacy we all know about today. The fit, finish, and attention to detail of a Westfalia Eurovan is arguably better than the Winnebago. It never fails that each time we go camping here in Texas we have folks come up to us and ask about this van. The short wheelbase allows for easy maneuvering and fits easily into a garage. I searched for a while to find this van 8 years ago. It lived its life in British Columbia before we purchased it. It has a clean, accident-free Texas title. Being that it is a Canadian model the gauge cluster is in kilometers, and it has it the mandatory daylight running lights found on Canadian cars. The van has 124,000 miles (or 199,500 kilometers). Any discrepancy in miles on a carfax report is because the inspection station wrote down kilometers and not miles.

The van has been reliable throughout our ownership and over the years I have proactively replaced as many components as possible to keep it that way. The 2.5L 5-cylinder engine pulls strongly and the 4 speed automatic transmission shifts with no issues. The transmission was rebuilt 35K miles ago by a previous owner. I added a hitch to the van for our bike rack, but we have never towed anything. It will cruise 75-80 mph on the interstate no problem, but I prefer to drive at the speed limit.

Exterior: The Jamaica Blue paint is original and shows well for +30 years of service. There are chips and scratches on the hood and other places along the body. There is a place by the rear license plate where the paint is peeling back. A few very small nickel size dents. The only rust is at the edge of the windshield on the passenger side. This area has been treated with POR-15 and has not seen any growth in the 8 years of ownership. The undercarriage shows no rust. Windshield has no chips or cracks. The canvas roof top tent has a professional repair handled under previous ownership. This is a professional repair with canvas repair patch on both sides of the repair. The tent is in great condition and has lots of life left.

Interior: No rips or tears in the upholstery. No stains. No broken plastic or chips in cabinets. The table which is stored under the rear seat has some knicks from how the seat closes on it. All the curtains are complete with no rips or damage. The rear seat folds out into a bed and the top tent is a bed as well. The privacy cover for the front windshield is included. The interior and Westfalia conversion are complete…no missing bits or broken parts. Refrigerator works, stoves and sink work. The refrigerator is a top open design which makes a lot of sense. It keeps the cold air from dumping out on the floor like on a traditional door style refrigerator. The refrigerator is controlled by a digital temperature unit above the front passenger compartment. I purchased the German made all weather floor mats specially designed for the T4 for the front footwells.

Issues: There is an air vent on the floor just behind the passenger seat that is designed to blow air only (not part of the air condition) to the rear seats area, it does not work. The rear drum brakes were recently replaced and make a ‘thump, thump’ noise on hard braking which should resolve as the new shoes break-in.

Parts replaced: Most of the work done under current ownership (last 5000 miles) has been to improve the reliability and drivability of the van. The tires were replaced with Michelin Agilis which are load rated for the van. Shocks were upgraded to Bilstein heavy duty. Front upper and lower ball joints replaced. CV boots replaced and repacked. Catalytic converter replaced. Brake lines upgraded from rubber to stainless steel. Rear drum brake shoes, drums and wheel cylinders recently replaced. As many coolant hoses I could find I replaced, and the originals were retained as spares. Thermostat and housing and any plastic fitting connecting coolant hoses. Coolant sensors. Radiator replaced proactively. All fluids changed within the last 5000 miles (brake fluid, coolant [Rowe AN Blue], differential, transmission). AC compressor, condenser, drier, and expansion valve replaced. Sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, cap and rotor. Air and fuel filter. Oil and filter changes (last oil change May 2023). Coach battery (2020) and engine battery (2021) replaced and always left on a trickle charger. Also included in the sale are many spare hard to find spare parts that I have collected (transmission control module (TCM), engine control module (ECM), timing belt kit and water pump, coil, distributor, hose, oil filters, transmission filter kit and more). Rest assured this van is well sorted mechanically and ready for adventure. Selling because we moved up to a larger class B RV. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
