1978 Volkswagen Bus TYPE 2 Westfalia
Up for sale is our 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia bus. We completed a full restoration to this bus, top to bottom. After spending years giving this bus quality attention with no detail going unnoticed, it is now a real head turner. From road-trips, camping adventures to sharing it at car-shows, this VW is an absolute blast! It is a show winner and has won multiple ‘best of show’ awards. This VW has been garage kept for the entirety of us owning it. It drives great and has been on multiple 2-3 hour drives never skipping a beat. It’s time to move it along to another owner to enjoy so we can work on other projects.
HISTORY: This bus started life as a Dakota beige bus with brown interior, 2.0 fuel injection engine. It is now is 2 toned aqua blue and white paint with matching tans, blues and whites for the interior.
MECHANICAL: The long block engine was rebuilt before we owned the bus and from what I can tell, after market AMC heads were installed and hydraulic lifters were added so no adjusting valves on this bus. The block is a CD case which codes out to a 1973 1700cc engine. There is not much difference between this engine and a 2000cc. This engine runs great and has a lot of pep! The fuel injection was removed at some point and a Weber single progressive carb was added.
NEW!Battery, battery cables, SVDA electronic distributor, oil cooler, belt, hoses, fuel lines, spark plugs and plug wires, foam engine seal. BlazeCut automatic fire suppression system was installed around the engine to provide fire protection.
Brakes were replaced and adjusted correctly. All new brake hoses as well as the brake fluid reservoir. I put new inner and outer tie rods on the front suspension, shocks, and drag link for the steering box. The steering is nice and tight and doesn’t have any issues and the bus stops great. Hankook tires are still good with plenty of life left in them.
Transmission fluid is fresh and it shifts like it should. No issues with the clutch. Clutch and rear seal were replaced when the engine was rebuilt and installed by the previous owner.
BODY: The body was completely stripped down to bare metal and built back up to what you see in the pictures. I spent many hours block sanding and prepping the body before laying the paint down. We completely stripped the body down to a shell taking all the glass out, doors, etc. to make sure everything was done correctly. The floors are in great shape with no rust holes. The only area that does show some rust is the battery tray area. A new metal tray was placed in but you can still see the old pan underneath. No issues though, and the battery holds just fine. The paint is super clean and straight. (Please look at all pictures) Only a few little areas are showing on the driver’s side center section of the body. It’s not a 100% perfect paint job but it’s still very nice! We did not cut corners on the restoration. Every window seal, door seal, window scrapers, weatherstripping were all replaced on this bus. A brand-new windshield was installed. The Westfalia pop-top was restored and repainted with high quality fiberglass boat paint and is in great shape. The canvas was replaced as well as all the seals for the pop-top. All the chrome on this bus was replaced with new high quality Wolfsburg West pieces. New headlights, turn signal lenses, taillights, side markers, license plate light assembly, antenna. All the signals, lights work great. The sliding door hinge is totally rebuilt and it slides and shuts great.
INTERIOR: The interior is all new except for the original Westfalia furniture. A brand new complete tan carpet kit was installed throughout the entire VW from front to back. We re-painted the furniture to go with the theme of the bus. If you are looking for a bright and fun interior, you will love this look! Custom bamboo headliner and accent pieces were installed throughout the bus to give it a beachy vibe.NEW!Front bucket seat covers, door panels, kick panels, sun visors, rear view mirror, window cranks, heater knobs, Bluetooth radio and door speakers, all foam pads were recovered with new fabric.The Z bed works great and folds down into a bed and the bunk up top was recovered as well. This bus originally came with gas powered stove but we decided to unhook the stove so it is currently not functional. We do have the original propane tank that goes under the bus. It will be included with the bus. The power hookup (inverter) was all removed as well as the refrigerator for more storage space by the previous owner.
