73k on 2.2L GoWesty rebuild (at 122,000 miles)

Dispersed camping heaven! Family owned since 1992. Maintained by Miles Bounds at NoName Garage in Eugene, Oregon.

My father bought this ‘87 Type II Westfalia Campmobile in 1992 and Pamela and I traded him for it when he could no longer use it in 2006 at 95,481 miles. “Lucia” now has 195,278 true miles with the odometer replaced at 157,138 miles (see 1/10/2018 service record #012442). It now reads 38,140 miles.

NO MORE HOKEY POKEY! With substantial mechanical upgrades, Lucia now holds the road like a pro and cruises up mountain passes (and occasionally passing) w/new Westy designed springs and shocks and a GoWesty 100cc long block expansion (2.1 stock to 2.2 liters).

We’ve striven to maintain as much of the original Westy features and character as possible, while modernizing for convenience. The most significant modernizations are in the engine, drivetrain and vehicle mechanics. Cosmetic modifications include: custom made draperies by Pamela, stereo speakers, Macintosh head unit, improved closet storage, insulated (carbon-neutral) wine and scotch cellar, USB charge port w/auxiliary battery level readout.

Substantial upgrades include:

103k — 16” wheels and tires installed by Gowesty (larger than stock);

105k — pop top tent replaced w/GoWesty featuring three-zippered windows;

112k — windows popped and sill rust/bodywork repair completed and original-color complete paint job done by RC Auto Body in Eugene, Oregon;

122k — rebuild by NoName Garage (NNG) w/Gowesty 100cc expanded long block;

125k — propane tank replaced w/GoWesty 3-gal;

135k — Fiamma f45 awning installed by Van Cafe in Santa Cruz, CA;

135k — Yakima pop top rack brackets installed;

135k — pop top pneumatic lift assists added offering one-armed roof raising (no more unloading the canoe at night/see photo!)

148k — replaced transaxle by NNG w/GoWesty 4:57 to 1 ring and pinion (makes cruising at 75-80 a breeze, while the low gears still offer the best 2wd off road experience west of the Mississippi);

157k — odometer replacement by NNG (see January 10, 2018 invoice number 012442);

158k — heavy duty starter by NNG to match expanded demand of 2.2 liter displacement;

162k — LED headlights by NNG;

164k — GoWesty heavy duty Billstein shocks specifically engineered for Westys and four new coil springs also engineered specifically for Westys install by NNG;

Other regular maintenance includes by primarily by NNG: oil changes every 3000 miles, and

CV boots, bushings and bearings, hose and belt replacements, brake pads and rotors, exhaust system and muffler, clutch, ball joints, window regulators, etc.
