1981 Volkswagen Rabbit LX

Vehicle Details

Original survivor 1981 VW Pickup LX 1.6 Diesel 5-spd, factory AC. In great sought-after stock condition with low 122,440 miles. Original paint with no prior body repair in evidence. Lived its life in the West: Los Angeles (owner 1), LA & Texas (owner 2, purchased in 2004), Nevada (owner 3, purchased in 2007)- No rust or corrosion. Working cold AC. This truck was a highly-optioned top-line vehicle in the era of oil embargos/high fuel prices (basically V1.0 to our current V2.0), and dealers were charging retail+ADM for any VW Diesel. New clutch, glow plugs, rear brake cylinders and shoes, all fluids/filters changed, new drive belts and steering rack boots. Adjusted cam and injector pump timing, front end alignment all to factory spec. This work was performed by VW specialist shop in 2011. Had water pump, head gasket, timing belt and injection pump seals replaced by 2nd owner in 2006 per included invoice. Runs great, starts immediately and ready to get 40+ MPG's. Has custom over-sized aluminum 23-gal fuel tank installed by 2nd owner, will travel 1000+/- miles between fill-ups. Partial service records from 1996 forward by original owner in log-book showing fill-ups, oil changes, mileage and repairs. Has had restful life since 2007 with current 3rd owner with low annual miles with invoices for repairs performed in 2011. Westmorland build date of 5-8-81 per communication with Volkswagen AG Corporate History Dept. in Wolfsburg. Original Sandstone Metallic paint is aged/faded, but decent condition with clear-coat taking the brunt of the UV rays- it is cracked/crazed/flaked. 2 minor body dents: driver door near outside handle and front lower valance panel damage from smacking something (see pics). Undamaged original rear bumper with endcaps, tailgate clean and undamaged still with factory letter stenciling. Passenger vent wing was replaced early in life (by dealer?) with up-graded thru-glass hinge attachment points, driver vent wing suffers from typical failure of factory glued-on hinges. LX interior package is in great condition: Original Autumn Tan Leatherette seats, dash, headliner, doorcards, etc. display no tears or abuse (top of driver door card has small crack from heat cycling in stress area). Slight discoloration of various plastics from age and UV light. Slight warping of dash pad above glove-box. Carpet shows well, however one of the PO's used silicone adhesive in an attempt to glue on velcro strips to hold floor mats in place- not too obvious with current vintage floor mats installed. Have uninstalled NOS replacement factory carpet set for 4-door Rabbit in correct burnt-orange color that is included in sale. Has vintage Pioneer AM/FM/Cassette in dash, acquired correct factory Blaupunkt AM/FM Stereo radio included in sale. The clock works! Bed cap has been on truck from new, bed in great condition with clean shinny paint- a few scratches and one minor dent in front driver-side area. Rubber window seals showing age, but not destroyed. Tires are dated and work for rolllers (good tread, no air leaks)- recommend replacements be installed before any extensive driving (165 80/13 tires are inexpensive, ~$250 set installed). Have misc. parts collection that goes with vehicle, including full set of oem Scirocco/Rabbit 12-spoke alloy wheels/caps/lugs, as well as documentation from last purchase, Bentley repair manual + others, and factory brochures/ads from the era. Clean and clear Michigan title- Had to move to Michigan from Nevada in 2020 to care for elderly parent, had truck commercially transported with me- has not been on road since arrival, only periodic starting and on battery tender on and off. Has been properly stored indoors in garage with cover, not seen any salt roads or outside rain/moisture since arrival. Shipping not included in winning bid/sale price and is responsibility of buyer- seller available to over-see loading with buyer's chosen shipper. No -0- or negative feed-back bidders, lower-48 US bidders only. Winning bidder will send deposit of $500 via PayPal immediately, balance of payment via bank wire due within 3 days of auction close.
