1967 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Type 2

Is there any vehicle with as many stories to tell as the VW Microbus? Camper, transporter, pickup truck, house on wheels, tour guide, whatever it is, the VW bus has done it. This 1967 Volkswagen Type 2 bus is just a wonderful way to grab all of that history and keep it for yourself, all wrapped in a familiar yet surprisingly stylish body.
Someone has obviously lavished a lot of time and attention on this VW and the results are pretty darn impressive. It's definitely not low-key with its white on light blue paint scheme, but the paint isn't the only thing that this VW is about. Instead, it's about details and here there are many. First and foremost, you'll note the split windshield up front that instantly makes this Bus more valuable. Splitties are the most sough-after, not only because they're the 1st generation Microbus, but also because they look the best and are significantly lighter than the loaves of bread that were to follow from 1968 on. Note the clean, unadorned lines accentuated not by graphics or art but by good bodywork and deep, shiny paintwork that only comes from pros doing their thing. The two-tone combination is quite period-correct and gives the bus a jaunty appearance, and even though it's not perfect, any owner would be proud to show it off. Other things like the painted bumpers and a big VW emblem in the center are trademarks that VW faithful can recognize from a mile away and all those windows make it as bright and airy inside as you'd expect. Curtains behind the glass also provide plenty of privacy as well as adding to the legendary look that makes the VW Bus so special.
The interior is really where these vehicles shine. Combining great preservation with a few restored components, it offers great colors and spacious accommodations for passengers, and the classic style is always impressive. The blue and white orange upholstery complement the two-tone exterior and that highly durable vinyl will last practically forever if cared for correctly. Proper wood side panels and door panels give it a very finished look and the matching wood headliner overhead and wood parquet floor underneath keeps everything cozy and authentic inside. And yes, the cabinets and table surfaces are all in good shape too, so this 11-window bus is ready for your next camping trip. The vinyl front seats offer a commanding view of the road completely free of obstructions, and the bus-like driving position is actually comfortable for long trips, which is really what these buses were designed to do. Basic VDO instrumentation was provided by the factory, the uber-cool original steering wheel is still in place, and a retro footprint gas pedal and several industry decals adorn the cabin to help push the ambiance. You'll also be pleased to see an upgraded stereo system with an AM/FM/CD head unit and speakers in the door panels. And in addition to three rows of seats, there's a reasonably large and nicely upholstered package shelf atop the engine bay in back that is often used as a bed, a space for 'alternative herbal reflection', or whatever else floats your boat.
The engine is a relatively high-performance version of the Beetle's venerable flat-four. Displacing 1776 cc, it's big enough to provide some added punch without sacrificing reliability and with a reported rebuild approximately 2,500 miles ago, it breathes easy, fires on demand, and pulls strong, which means more power and reliability. A downdraft carburetor helps with power production and the engine bay is as neatly presented as the rest of the bus. A dual exhaust system extracts every bit of horsepower from the little boxer engine and it has a great note that's instantly familiar and will bring a smile to your face. The underside is in very solid condition and with a 4-speed manual transmission, it is a lot of fun to drive. Minilite-style wheels look sporty and are wrapped with thick rubber for a smooth ride and a very cool finishing touch.
If you're a fan of VW buses, this final-year 1st generation Type 2 is a great one to have. Nicely restored and preserved, it's an 11-window beauty that's ready to hit the road and see the world. Call today!
