** For full Pictures and Descriptions please visit 503motoringsales.com ** With a lifetime around air-cooled VW's, I can honestly say I have never had the honor of being around one with so much pedigree. This particular Oval has been a long time project of our close friend Jason Smith and has been making the shop rounds down in California until its debut in October 2018. Now complete the Ragtop has already graced the cover page of this months Hot VW's magazine, its largest feature ever, as well as taking Best of Show and Top Oval at this years OktoBugfest. Enough of the accolades, lets get in to the meat of this 1956 Volkswagen Type 117 Beetle Oval Window Ragtop by grabbing the Cliffs Notes from Alex Arredondo's feature in Hot VW's. Henry Marchena started with a full, meticulous rotisserie restoration of the body with 4 coats of Glasurit L240 Agave Green finished off with 3 coats of clear, color sanded and an additional 2 coats of clear applied. Lenny Copp of West Coast Classic handled the H-Pattern Interior in Red with Black Piping and German wool headliner to go with the canvas ragtop and oatmeal square weave carpet. The body was then bolted to a literal rolling piece of art, the Pan, restored to absolutely astounding standards by Dave "Pip" Pipoly and his crew from The Compound. The crowning Jewel of this artwork features fresh pan halves, custom tranny mounts for the Gene Berg 5-spd before and coated in High Gloss Black for a showroom shine. Once coated the fellas at The Compound installed the Old Speed 4-Inch Narrowed Front Beam with 2.5 inch Drop Spindles, chrome tie rods, welded and reshaped trailing arms, custom steering dampeners, QA1 front shocks, billet steering box, Billet X Jamar brake fluid reservoir, CnC machined brake line output port and restored German pedal assembly from Bill and Steves. Another fine detail to notice is the fully restored Porsche Pre-A 356 Brakes with custom one off BRM's narrowed by Pip to 17x4.75 with 165/40R17 front and 17x6 rear with 245/45R17 Hoosier cheater slicks. Going even further Trevor Garr fabricated a special dye to match and extend the Wolfsburg West Split bumpers original groove while the mounts were welded and smoothed for a seamless finish. The heart of this Picasso is a one off Clyde Berg Built 2387cc flat 4 using an original VW case featuring a Gene Berg forged and wedge-mated crank, Berg H-Beam rods, 94mm Mahle pistons, Berg 315 cam, Berg 1.4 rockers, Berg 30mm oil pump, type 4 oil cooler, Berg ported CB 044 heads, 11:1 compression ratio, custom shortened manifolds and Weber 48mm iDA carburetors, Gene Berg flywheel, GB104 clutch and an A-1 header and muffler. The Gene Berg 5-Speed transaxle built by Mike Herbert of Rancho Performance features a 4.37 ring and pinion and 3.78, 2.06, 1.58, 1.21, 0.82 gear ratios. Once that was completed Jack Sacchatte of JayCee Enterprises supplied the Velocity Stacks, top and bottom billet pulleys and billet clamp for the Don Zig magneto, T-1 iDA billet street linkage, oil pressure gauge, AN fittings and hidden access panels by Danny "GabFab" Gabbard which allows for easy carb adjustments. All of this is surrounded by some of the most beautifully sculpted tinwork I have ever seen due to the talents of Scott Siegler of ISR Motorsports and Ben Connelly of Oregon City. Some additional details include a full Wiring Works loom, custom body to pan hardware, cloth fender beading, fresh molding, trim and handles, restored original quarter window pop-outs, a fully restored '55 Batwing steering wheel, ISP speaker Cover and 8000rpm Tach, Original Gene Berg 5-speed shifter with Line-Lock and Crow Enterprises racing belts. Phew, with all of that its hard to believe there is even more. The details just keep going and every time you scrutinize this Oval you find more and more detail. It truly is one of the nicest air-cooled I have ever seen. Please feel free to call me personally or email with any questions. Tim 503-469-9821 sales@503motoring.com
