1968 Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback

Meet Susan. She's the one you've been waiting for.
Susan is a 1968, VW Type III Squareback FI, with Savanna Beige paint and Nut Brown interior, in complete unmolested original condition.
Purchased in Seattle, WA in 1968, lived as a daily driver in Missoula, MT until 1983, when she was garaged until 2017. After 35 years in a garage, she was brought to Los Angeles, where she underwent a complete mechanical overhaul at ISP West. This included rebuilding the engine and brake system, replacing the clutch, restoring the fuel tank and replacing all fuel lines. While the fuel tank was out, the steering coupler and dampener were also replaced. The original Auxiliary Air Regulator wasn't working correctly, and was replaced with a NOS AAR that I found locally. The original muffler was shot, so we replaced it with a NOS OEM muffler from the 1970-73 Type 3 (which breathes better, so she sounds fantastic)
Only two modifications were made to the stock setup. We lowered the front end 'one click' to achieve an even ride height, and replaced the stock beauty rings with the chrome trim rings you see pictured. (I still have the original beauty rings.)
EVERYTHING works. The horn works, the dome light works, the clock works, the brake system test light works. Headlights, brake lights, turn signals and wipers all work. Heating and ventilation system works. She's even got the original engine cover strap intact.
Susan has never been in an accident, and has no rust in the floor pans, or anywhere else. Well, there are a few spots of surface rust on the doors where the paint is gone, but that can be cleaned up easily. The hood, front quarter panels and tailgate all have original paint in excellent condition. The doors and rear passenger quarter panel were repainted at some point, and they didn't do a great job, so the color doesn't match perfectly and some of the paint has peeled off. The roof was damaged at some point, and whoever fixed it did a cheap bondo job, which now has plenty of cracks and discoloration. All in all, the body is remarkably straight. The chrome is all in nice condition, shiny and free of pitting, but the bumpers have some dents. The trunk (frunk) is immaculate, and contains the original tool kit, and a perfectly restored jack.
The interior is entirely original, and is in pretty decent shape considering it's age. Nut Brown was a less common option. Most came with black. The original German wool carpet is surprisingly still intact, and in good shape thanks to the Wolfsburg rubber mats. The dash has deteriorated (as usual with old foam) but I have an extra OEM dash for you to replace it with. There is a hole in the vinyl headliner, but that is also easily replaceable. All of the weather seals are intact, but are 50 years old, and should be replaced. The interior paint is all in great shape. The passenger seat lever doesn't engage correctly, so you have to reach underneath and pull the bar to bring the back forward.
She runs like a champ. Starts up easily, idles smooth and shifts smoothly. Steering feels good, suspension feels good. She'll cruise at 75mph on the freeway without issue, and stops in a hurry when you need her to. Sometimes while accelerating through lower rpms, she'll have a bit of a 'glug' or 'gulp', but that's really her only intermittent tick that I can't explain.
Nothing beats the original German manufacturing, and that's why Susan is such a find. 50 years old, 101,925 miles, and completely unmolested. She's ready to be your daily driver as is, but would be absolutely fabulous with a little paint and interior work.
I will provide paperwork for all the work we did at ISP West. I am keeping my personalized plates. Please contact me if you have any questions!
