1970 VW Type 3 Fastback For Sale
This is a 1970 model VW Fastback that has been in California since new.
It features it's original paint job with only minor touch ups, an extremely solid body and chassis.
New tires, new seat upholstery, very good runner and driver...and has the quite rare fully automatic transmission!
We get a lot of calls from folks that are not VW nuts, but they want an old VW...and the question comes up more than you could
imagine...as to if they have automatic transmissions.
Well...for the most part...the answer is no. Beetles and Ghias you never find as a fully automatic trans...just the "auto stick
but that still has the shifter... it was only the Type 3 models and the late Bay window Busses that were offered with a full automatic trans.
They are pretty hard to find these days!
What is nice about this car is that it has a very stock and unmodified look to it. Very "vintage" with the whitewalls and the light blue paint color.
It was bought new in Los Angeles and then made it up to the high desert of southern California where it remained the rest of it's life.
Always in a dry climate, it is extremely solid and rust free, and thanks to a life of proper maintenance (mostly through the VW dealer)
it is still in good running condition.
The Fastback body style is really one of my personal favorites...I so love those lines...so "60's".
This was a model VW aimed direct for the US market with. While they did offer them in other parts of the world
the fastback body style was avery American thing during that period.
And the Automatic transmission...also another very American thing in those times!
This car has some gentle patina and some dings and scratches but the overall look is quite clean
and there is simply nothing like having an "original" car...they are in such demand these days.
A car can be restored again and again...but they are only original once!!
The paint is shiny and the body is straight.
New stainless body trim has been put on and it looks fantastic...a big improvement over the faded aluminum originals.
Pop out rear windows are another nice item.
What a pretty car.
1970 was the first year for the larger taillights and squared off front end.
It would be the final design change and the type 3 model line ended a few short years later.
If you have never driven a Type 3, you should really give it a try.
The cars really drive like a "real car". The suspension is so smooth and the feel on the road is much more
substantial than the Beetle.
With a fuel injected 1600cc engine, it is no race car, especially with the automatic
but once up to cruising speed they really just drive so nice!!
This car cleaned up so very well.
It had been in storage for many years, a pride and joy for it's owner and something he vowed to never part
with in his final years, even though he was too old to drive it.
Unfortunately he passed on recently and his wife decided it must find a home where it can be driven and enjoyed,
just as her husband had driven and enjoyed it for so long. And now the quest for that home is happening... is it YOU?
The tires are brand new and the whitewall tire rings are a nice touch.
These can be easily removed and you can go back to the blackwall, but I really like the look of it this way!
There are a few dings and scratches here and there...a couple in the bumper as you can see.
The drivers side taillight lens looks a little faded...the rear window seal is dry from age
(but a new one comes with the car).
Little things will go a long way on this car to improve it further and make it be all it can be.
The original headliner is in remarkable shape.
Very nice up here.
There is some sun damage to the front window posts where the headliner comes down above the dash
but that is the worst of it when it comes to the headliner.
New carpet in the car floor is well and look great.New package tray, carpet, seats front and back recently done!!
The original door panels are in really nice shape.
New upholstery on the drivers side and the rear seat
brand new top quality original seat cover set in the proper material comes with the car.
The dash pad is cracked under the dash cover, but the rest of the dash is in very nice shape.
As you can see the paint shines well...the worst spot is the top of the drivers fender
which has worn through to the primer in spots....you can just see it in this shot.
Original tool roll is here and complete
Under the front hood is excellent.
Very clean in here
Original jack
Nice and clean original finish...I love cars like this!
There are a couple of service books...these markings here made in the 90's show the car at 145,344 miles.
It shows 72,000 miles on the odometer (will double check)...but this is thought to be 172k total since new.
It seems like a lot, especially considering the impressive original condition of the car.
Proof of what proper car care and a garaged life can do.
The car has been up in the High Desert of So Cal and serviced in those areas.
Here is a business card in the one service book.
These stamps from the mod 70's show the car with 85,000 miles...so it was
being used quite a bit in the early years.
The first years of ownership were in Culver City, near Los Angeles, Never left the state of California and never in any harsh weather or snow!!
ABSOLUTELYA TRUE SURVIVOR!!
