1986 Cabriolet Karmann Edition
1986 Volkswagen Cabrio Karmann
I bought this car about 10yrs ago from the sister of a VW mechanic. Since I've owned it, the car has only been driven on dry nice days spring thru fall. It got wet twice a year for a washing and caught in 2 T-storms over the 10yrs. The only rust spot was at the driver side windshield seal. I cleared it and treated it so it wouldn't get worse, but the hole is still there. Car has been garaged entire time until last fall when a Scirocco project forced the Cabby outside where it has been covered all winter. I currently have 6 cars on insurance and need to trim the herd. I hardly get a chance to drive it anymore, so this one is the obvious choice.
Odometer reads167K, but as common, has worked intermittently since I've owned it. Actually a few times has run fast. Starts and idles perfect. The only drivability issue is on hot summer days, there's sporadic stalling and/or bucking during acceleration after idling for extended periods or stuck in traffic. I rarely drive it, I never bothered to look it more. And once you're moving again it goes away. I get about 28mpg according to my best calculations.
The dash is great with shine and no cracks. The Wolfsburg interior is leather and shows signs of age and fading in spots. Still a lot nicer and unique from the standard cloth VW interiors. The drivers seat has always had a towel on it and there is separation at the seams on the seat.
It's had all tune up components (plugs, wires, cap, rotor) replaced in the last 10K. I had the A/C system removed, a low temp fan switch, low temp thermostat and new radiator installed for better cooling. Brakes were recently replaced. The headlights are upgrades to H4 Hellas with city lights and relayed harness. The original clear sealed beams will be included and can easily pop back in. There is a full sized spare in the trunk. The climate control levers are loose as common with this generation. Never fixed because neverused. Front upper and lower front stress bars installed.
Top was replaced in 2004 before I bought it, but there are a couple spots at the edges that have cracked where it folds. I drove it top down 99% of the time. Original Havana Brown Metallic paint still has shine. I have yet to see this color on the road since the 90's. Stereo is a complete custom upgrade that sounds amazing
Body has no damage aside from a couple of small dings.
Car is for sale locally so auction may end sooner.
