Description:
1986 Volkswagen Scirocco
For sale is my 1986 Volkswagen Scirocco. Upgraded for extra power and better handling, I purchased her specifically for a run on all the best mountain roads of the east coast. And she did it like a champ.Since then, I've found less and less time to take her on the open road. I need to make room for other projects, so it's time for her next adventure.
The previous owner was the one who did most of the engine work to make it an enhanced road machine. He stated that the 16V motor is the 2.0-liter out of a Passat. While I cannot verify that, the way it runs feels like this a younger motor than the mileage suggests. Plus, between the upgraded head, headers, exhaust, and much more, this is plenty quick and makes a terrific sound. On the road, upgrades like the full EuroSport bracing kit, four-wheel disc brakes, and wider Falken Azenis rubber take what's already a sharp handling VW and makes it a ton of fun.
New pieces within the last 9 months/3k miles beyond regular maintenance:-rear calipers-battery-oil pressure gauge (much better than the idiot light, and shows this motor is strong)-tires (Falken Azenis)-auxiliary cooling fan (a necessity for a good Florida classic)
The body is complete with only a few dings and the occasional surface corrosion usually associated with the dings. If I were kind about the paint, I'd call the color matte gold. If I were feeling mean, I would say someone spent a Saturday at Sherwin Williams. And this is a very complete car, right down to the Karmann badging. So it's certainly not the best, but it also hasn't gone down the rough path that many others Sciroccos have seen.
I did add black BMW bottle cap wheels, and they look great with the rack, spoiler, and all the other black elements. More importantly, the spacing allowed for the better/wider tires. They don’t rub in the turns, but there can be a little rub if you hit a big bump (I didn't have the heart to roll the fenders, but you can.) And yes, since there are no VW badges on the car, people have asked, "What kind of BMW is that?" - I guess not everyone remembers the mighty Scirocco.
The interior is in decent shape. The speedo and tach work fine, and the Momo steering wheel is a nice addition. Those outstandingly comfortable factory bucket seats are still quite complete. The headliner still looks good, and there's additional material that comes with the sale. The dash is also complete, but it has seen better days. The rear seat was removed for added bracing, and the added flat parcel shelf is now used to hold the battery box and full-size spare for better weight distribution. But the complete rear seat does come with the sale.
Perfect cars command perfect money, and so I won't pretend this is flawless. Instead I'm looking for someone who will enjoy this the same way I have -- a turn-key, tight-handling VW that's ready for fun right now, and it has potential for whatever comes next.
The car is for sale locally, and so there is a possibility of ending early. But this is a no reserve auction, so no matter what, this VW is going to a new home by Sunday! The winner will need to collect the car within two weeks after end of auction.
