1953 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon
1953 Barndoor Smooth Gate Single Cab, Super Foods, Original Paint! Here's your chance to own one of the coolest and most recognizable Smooth Gate Single Cabs in existence. This early October 1953 was used by the Super Foods Market in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada, back inthe day, and was logoed forpromotion of their business. Till this day, the Truck still displays the vast majority of its original Dove Blue paint, and it has an awesome natural patina, too.
Details to note include the original smooth side gates which are impressive considering their rarity, age, and that they are still in their original paint, the very nice original hoops and canvas, the early brakelight decklid, the correct Barndoor long rib front bumper, the 16 inch wheels with fresh Firestone bias ply tires, the original panels inside the cab, the restored Barndoor front seat, the original Barndoor 3 spoke steering wheel, the correct ribbed semaphores (needing attention), the 36hp engine, bubble taillights, etc.
The body is way above average compared to what the few handfuls of remaining unrestored Smooth Gate Trucks look like. It's got dents, dings, some typical rust perforation down low, and is still mostly original L31 Dove Blue paint. Overall, many of us would just enjoy it as it is, keep it dry, and have fun with it. Others would opt to do some localized welding and paint blending to preserve it to a higher level. Without a doubt, nobody in their right mind would ruinthis special Truck with a restoration. As ratty as it is, this is still one of the nicest unrestored Smooth Gates in the world.
The interior is very complete, super original, and features original paint, the original pressed board panels, a beautifully and faithfully restored front seat, and the original front floor mat is also present although it's ratty.
Mechanically the Truck runs and drives but it needs a going through to be made into a reliable regular driver. The 36hp engine runs well, the original Barndoor transaxle pops out of 2nd gear so it will need to be rebuilt, and the electrical will need tending to including cleaning up wiring ends, contacts, grounds, sorting the semaphores, etc. It drove out to some high profile shows a while back but has been garaged most of the time since.
Without a doubt this is one to fall in love with, a true rarity, needing a little love to reach its potential, but well worth the effort! Thanks!
