1967 Triumph Spitfire Mark II, 1980 Spitfire 1500, and 1973 Triumph GT6 Mark III
1967 Triumph Other
This Triumph "SpitSix" was customized in California in the early 2000s with the 2.0-liter inline-six from a 1973 GT6 Mark III as well as the suspension, brakes, Rotoflex axles, hood, and doors are also from that vehicle.
These parts were mated with the body of a 1980 Spitfire 1500, the frame from a 1967 Spitfire Mark II, and the bumpers from a 1972 Spitfire Mark IV. A single-rail four-speed manual gearbox with J-type overdrive was also sourced from a Spitfire 1500, and the Stromberg carburetors were converted to throttle-body fuel injection and linked to a programmable ECU. The overdrive is activated in 3rd or 4th gears via a switch on top of the shifter knob.
The convertible body originated from a 1980 Spitfire, and it has been fitted with the clamshell hood and vent-window-equipped doors from a 1973 GT6 plus 1972 Spitfire chrome bumpers.
The body, trunk, and engine compartment were painted in lacquer intended to match Porsche "Guards Red" in the early 2000s.
Equipment includes a replacement black Robbins convertible top, a tan top boot, a black front air dam, a driver-side mirror, and dual polished exhaust tips.
The project is said to have been completed in 2004, and the car sat mostly unused until the previous seller acquired the vehicle in February 2024.
Subsequent work involved installing a Lucas 22D distributor, tuning the fuel-injection system, flushing the fuel tank and lines, and replacing the starter motor, fuel filter, the brake and clutch cylinders, Rotoflex axles, battery, and fluids as well as fitting tan houndstooth upholstery over replacement foam padding, applying insulation beneath replacement carpeting, refurbishing the gauges, and replacing the black convertible top, the wood-rimmed steering wheel, and the transmission cover.
The included hardtop has recently been fitted with replacement rubber and furflex seals and the inside of the front-fender lips have been rolled back to accommodate previously installed larger tires.
The car also is equipped with Koni shocks, an electric fuel pump, a fuel-pressure regulator, three-point seatbelts, a USB port, a RetroSound head unit, and Pioneer speakers.
The vehicle is currently registered and Titled in Oregon as a 1967 Triumph Convertible.
There is a very small dent on the driver-side quarter panel, the chrome bumpers exhibit light scratches and pitting, and the paint finish has a few small chips, scratches, and blemishes.
Rare BWA Sportstar 13″ four-spoke alloy wheels with Spirit of America center caps were mounted with brand new 175/70R13 Hankook Energy All Season tires on June 24, 2024.
The suspension, brakes, and Rotoflex axles were sourced from a GT6 Mark III during the aforementioned build, and the Spitfire Mark II frame used in the build was refurbished and powder-coated black.
Siless Liner insulation was applied to a replacement transmission cover and beneath replacement black carpeting.
The three-point seatbelts were rewebbed in March 2024.
Also installed under previous ownership, a four-channel RetroSound Bluetooth stereo system is mounted to the center console, and a USB port replaces the cigarette lighter in the dash.
The stereo is wired to four Pioneer speakers positioned in the rear panels.
A wood-rimmed Astrali steering wheel with polished spokes fronts the wood-veneered dashboard fascia.
The Smiths instrumentation was refurbished under previous ownership and includes a combination oil-pressure/water-temperature gauge sourced from an MGB. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 24k miles, approximately 2,500 of which were added in the last year; true mileage is unknown.
Everything works, but there is no A/C unless you count driving with the top down, which is the best A/C ever! The fuel gauge does not point all the way to FULL, but it is accurate after passing the half way mark and as it approaches empty
The 1,998cc inline-six was sourced from a GT6 Mark III in the early 2000s and has a body-color valve cover. A kit supplied by Patton Machine,
https://www.pattonmachine.com/product-category/tbi/
was used to convert the dual Zenith Stromberg carburetors into throttle bodies for a fuel-injection system.
The fuel tank was removed and flushed along with the fuel lines, and high-pressure feed and return lines were installed, as was an electric fuel pump, a fuel-pressure regulator, and a replacement fuel filter. Other equipment includes an ignition module, and sensors for manifold absolute pressure, coolant temperature, and oxygen level. The coolant, oil, oil filter, starter motor, and battery also were replaced under previous ownership. Software and a cable for the programmable ECU will accompany the car.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Spitfire 1500–sourced single-rail four-speed manual transmission with a J-type overdrive unit. The clutch cylinders were replaced under previous ownership. Flaked paint is noted on the pinch welds and elsewhere on the underside.
The vehicle is titled under the FC-number shown above, which is stamped on the frame plate behind the left-front wheel and is consistent with a Spitfire Mark II. A British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, dated June 24, 2024 is also included, along with recent service records, detailing work done under current ownership, such as replacing the oil sender line, installing a new water pump and thermostat, flushing the Clutch Master and Slave Cylinder with fresh fluid. New wiper blades were also installed. More pictures are available upon request via email. Please use the Contact Seller button. I can help with shipping if needed. I recently put it on a U-Haul trailer for the last relocation trip. The vehicle is currently in Rockaway Beach, OR, which is a 2-hour drive from Portland. I can deliver it anywhere in Oregon or Washington state. It is a blast to drive, and loves winding roads!
