Early Steel Dash 1961 Triumph TR4 With Overdrive Southern Car Runs and Drives
1961 Triumph TR4
GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY: Time to let go of our car collection. This is a low reserve auction and the Triumph TR4 will be sold, on or off auction. Started collecting about 50 years ago and the main objective was to buy the best one owner, matching numbers, rust free cars for pleasure and investment. This early TR4, along with others in our collection, are being sold due to the owners age/health. Below are a few examples of our 100 percent positive feedback. None of these buyers physically saw the cars they bought until they arrived at their homes:#1. 1970 Cougar Eliminator - "Car was exactly as advertised, maybe even better - THANKS Richard". #2. 1971 Jaguar XJ6 - "Great car - honest seller". #3. 1960 Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite - "Car was exactly as described, I would buy from him again". #4. 1966 Austin Healey 3000 - "Awesome - Exactly as described - fully trust this seller." #5. 1974 TVR 2500M - "Great deal, fast shipping. Thank you sir". #6. 1972 Jaguar XKE - "Perfect car from a perfect seller - thank you my friend". #7. 1964 1/2 Mustang Convertible - "Car is in unbelievable original condition - very happy".
#8. 1974 Porsche 914 2.0 - "Great people! Have no doubts when buying from this seller. One of the best!"
My Son and I bought this TR4 from a family friend in Alabama November 15, 1998. It has been in our warehouse storage since that time (22 years) and was brought out for recomissioning this past month. It is a very early first year 1961 model steel dash TR4. Titled as a 1962 but it is indeed a 1961, serial number 1725, out of 2470 TR4's manufactured for all of 1961. The British Heritage Certificate confirms this and also confirms that it is a full matching numbers car. Built December 1, 1961, dispatched to Standard Triumph Motor Company in Jacksonville Florida December 20, 1961. Original paint was Signal red with a black leather interior and white top. Original Laycock overdrive equipped.
ENGINE:
The engine is the correct numbers matching original. A real plus here. One of the tightest and best TR4 engines. Starts and runs perfectly. Compression ratio on all 4 cylinders is within one or two pounds of 190. This was taken a couple of days ago with a cold engine and dry cylinders. No smoke, no noises. It may have been rebuilt years ago - don't quite remember but can see some new gaskets. Carburetors are the originals and are correctly marked as such with the float bowl aluminum tags. The hardboard engine cowling is still the original. Engine number CT890E.
TRANSMISSION/CLUTCH:
The transmission is the original Triumph Laycock Overdrive unit. Works well in all gears, syncros work well. Overdrive works well in top 3 gears. Fourth gear is just a touch louder than the rest - not anything most would notice. I am being critical. Clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder and hose are brand new.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT:
Excellent, original and straight as shown. Everything else looks to be 1961 factory original and intact. New battery.
BRAKES/SUSPENSION/WHEELS/TIRES:
All new brakes. New brake master cylinder, front calipers rebuilt, new rear wheel cylinders, new rubber hydraulic lines, new brake pads, new rear brake shoes. Emergency brake works well. Suspension is all original and intact. New rear shocks were installed when put in storage. Wheels are the original steel wheels with hubcaps. Much better in my opinion than any wire wheel. Spare wheel is included. Tires are at least 22 years old, hold air and need to be replaced.
SHEET METAL BODY PANELS:
The sheet metal body panels are all in good condition. Overall condition is quite good and solid with some small filled spots here and there for dings, not rust. One of the rockers has some filler in it that is cracked open. The rest and the other one look solid. Bottoms of both doors are excellent and rust free. No bondo. No trunk bottom rust. Floors are very solid originals with a couple of small fiberglass patches that were not necessary but done well years ago. Didn't even notice it until we cleaned the area. Hood has had two hold down pins installed years ago near the front cowl.
INTERIOR/UPHOLSTERY:
Had new carpet and seat covers installed years ago - Carpet is worn, seats need new diaphrams. All panels are originals - interior could use a redo but still useable as is.
DASH AREA:
All original gauges look very nice. Odometer shows 60057 and is probably correct or close to it. Wipers work. Generator/ammeter works. Oil pressure gauge works - very high oil pressure. Fuel gauge works. Water gauge works. Runs cool. Tachometer works, sort of - swings from end to end. Speedometer does not work. Radio and heater motor do not work. Steering wheel is cracked on both sides. Horns work but would honk sometimes just by turning the steering wheel so I removed the horn contact under the horn button and put it in the glovebox. Manual choke on the dash works but should be replaced with a proper "T" handle choke. Takes too much finger power to pull the little round knob on this one.
PAINT:
Car looks gorgeous from 10 feet away. One repaint was done years ago in the original Signal red color. It was a cheap amateur paint job and is awful looking up close. Can see sanding marks and some sanding spots and some filled in dings clearly up close. Still, it is usable as it stands.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT:
Good and solid - worn paint but no rust.
UNDERCARRIAGE/CHASSIS:
Very solid and straight. Original owner had the entire undercarraige tarred when new to protect against rust. Normally I would suspect any kind of chassis undercoating but I know this car and he used a thick TAR. I scraped a few spots off and the factory original black paint is intact and shiny as new underneath. Would take a lot of work to have this tar removed to expose the original chassis. I personally would leave it as is.
EXHAUST:
An old Monza exhaust is on the car - still works OK and can be used as is.
GLASS:
Original glass is all intact. Scratches on side windows.
TOP/FRAME:
The Robbins top that is on it replaced the original one 22 years ago. So it is 22 years old, has shrunk somewhat and somehow developed a tear on the left front corner. Still useable but? Frame is excellent original.
PAPERWORK:
Free and clear title in my name. British Motor Heritage certificate included.
FACTORY ID PLATES:
All Vehicle identification ID plates are intact and correct. The vehicle serial number is CT1725LO - correct matching numbers.
REVIEW:
A documented matching numbers first year Triumph TR4 roadster that can be driven as it stands or worked on while driving to upgrade it's condition. The early 61 steel dash TR4's have a lot of character and are getting hard to find. It has not been driven on the road since it's recomissioning - only driven up and down our long driveway. You will need to drive it slowly to break the new brakes in and possibly sort minor details out.
VALUE:
As of this date Hagerty Classic Car values lists the 1961 Triumph TR4's at: #1 - $45,400. #2 - $27,100. #3. $16,900. #4. $8,200. Add $1000 for overdrive.
INSPECTION OF CAR:
It is recommended that you personally inspect the car or have a 3rd party inspect it for you. I can accommodate anyone to show them the car. I have sold roughly 30 autos and motorcycles through ebay over the past 20 years with a solid 100 percent buyer satisfaction feedback. I give buyers an honest description, a better product and a better deal than they expect.
SHIPPING:
Having shipped cars to all parts of the world over the years I can assist the buyer with transport or completely arrange it, only if necessary. However the cheapest and most efficient method is for the new owner to call a transport broker in their area and have them put out bids for the job. The car is in a secure place at my home and it can be collected there. I can assist with loading.
PAYMENT & BIDDING:
Contact me prior to bidding if you have less than 5 feedbacks or your bid will be cancelled and you will be barred from any of my auctions. A $1000 NON refundable deposit via Paypal is due immediately after the auction closes. N0 Paypal for the remaining balance and the balance is due within 3 days via wire transfer or express mail with a bank cashiers check or cash. No Paypal for the balance. Payment is to be made in advance of collecting the car. This is an auction and you have plenty of time to inspect the car personally or have a 3rd party inspect it for you - inspections are welcome and encouraged. Winning the auction does not mean that you now have the privilege of coming to inspect the car to see if you like it. (or haggle on the price). When the auction is over, it is your car and payment is due at the close of the auction per these instructions. No Paypal for the balance.
